You folks were right about the metallic sound coming from the engine in my post <http://www.mgexperience.net/phorum/read.php?1,417822> . It is the water pump and ya also proved the hubby right over his friend--thank you so very, very much:

Now another question for ya. At the local Advance Auto I can buy a rebuilt water pump and gasket for $29.44 or a new one for $68.00. Is the quality as good on a rebuilt or should I go with the new one? Opinions please.

Your turn :)

Don't buy a modern replacement if you can help it. They don't last. Find a cast iron pump. It will last as long as the original did.

(someone correct me if the late models are different from early ones)

Engle Imports has the new OEM type cast Iron water pumps for a hell of a lot less than $68.

We just put a pump w/ cast iron impeller on a 75 B who's previous plastic impeller had melted. We got it from Engel and it was $61.79 retail (comes with a gasket).

Buzz is the man.

Ya, on our cars, it is very, very, very rare for the timing chain to break or the tensioner to go south. I agree that "USUALLY" the hole does leak. But I've seen that hole plugged by people "because it was leaking", imagine that, and I've also seen it closed up by paint and other yucky stuff that gets around an engine. So that doesn't always hold true.

The timing chain, although rare, usually sounds like a slapping or tapping, and the water pump is almost always a scraping or squealing sound.

Good Job!

Did they both actually Hear it? Or were the guesses from the board, because those are just a best guess, at the very best!

Brian the hubby and his friend both heard the sound but disagreed as to what is was. After the replies on this forum they removed the fan belt (as suggesed here) and there was no doubt it is the water pump. It was all shaky! Mark this one down as another correct reply from the "experts" right here on the forum :) :)

When I do a search on Engel Imports I get a site called "Alanta Imports". Is that the right place ?

You might want to consider NAPA as well. You should be able to look at it before you buy, and make sure it has a metal impeller.
