Anyone have any experience owning one? I'm poking around looking for an LBC Recovery Vehicle and came across this:-

http://burlington.craigslist.org/car/440398395.html

I know it's going to consume a fair amount of gas, but anyone care to hazard an educated guess if driven gently? And do you think my dogs would prefer an X-Box or another gaming system? Also, is Old Yeller suitable viewing?

I vote Playstation 3, and Ol' Yeller is acceptable.

You won't probably drive far enough for them to see the end, since it is a Ford. It will break down prior to the end of the movie. :D

$900?! All jokes aside, what is wrong with it? and right in Stowe too DOH! only if you noticed it before (or he posted it before).

FWIW, I drive e series vans (boxes actually) every day (with the 7.3D engine though). They seem to be pretty reliable trucks.

When we last ran gas jobs they only got 10 mpg at best but that was the 460. The diesel versions are much better on fuel

Yes, I know all about "If it sounds too good to be true ...." I'll tread lightly. Actually, I just missed a salvage title 1998 S10 Blazer for $1000. Listed for a month with no action then 2 of us show up at the same time!

A diesel would be nice, but this is the 351W.

We have a 15-passenger one here at work. If we are lucky, we get 8mpg!

8 MPG is certainly a gas hog. Of course if it's being driven with the company paying for the gas, it's probably foot to the floor, fuel economy be damned. That's certainly how I used to drive. Any idea what engine's in it?

It's a 350 I think.

Actually, it doesn't get driven hard - it would be upside down if anybody tried. I hate the thing, drive it like a school bus, and it STILL gets 8 mpg!

I have suggested Lassie Come Home...

Maybe "The Littlest Hobo" would be better for them.

I bet its a transmission, a good test drive could determine that.

Is that a problem area with Fords?

I'm only saying that because it seems cheap and it has a great engine in it. The engine thats in that van is the 351 Windsor. Its a pretty good engine that was used in about every truck and even the mustang in the 90's. I'm just using process of elimination to figure out why its only $900. You might be lucky and its just really cheap!

Has to be an RV forum out there that can tell you these things and other to watch for.

Don't know if it'll turn up anything. I asked if anyone knew of a Buyers Guide.

Just talked to the owner. Seems he works at a Chev dealership (Parts Manager). Owner since '98, now has 180k miles. No mechanical problems, a bit of rust starting in the rear doors and behind the R/S running board.

He says he sees 16mpg running around and up to 21mpg on the highway.

Older full size conversion vans like that, no matter how nice they are, aren't worth a bucket of warm spit to a dealer and the trade in value is zilch. A contractor here in town buys them, strips the seats and stuff out, uses them up hauling everything you can think of, junks them and guys another.

It's cheap because it's worthless on the market.

Sounds like what I'll do. Haul the dogs around, sleep in the back and drag my LBC trailer.

I had a 94 E-150 with a 351 & the Club Chateau package. Bought it with 30K on in got rid of it with 220K on it. The E-od tranny needs to be serviced regularly but it was a seriously strong truck. Probably half the miles were with a 16' box trailer behind it, so it wasn't babied. With the trailer about 9mpg. Without it 13 to 15. Now that was mostly highway & when you push a brick down the road @ 75-80mph the aerodynamics cost you some fuel mileage

I've had a 93 E-250 with the 300 cubic inch 6 cyl for 16 years now. Get's about 10 mpg. Body is rusting away now so just I bought a "new" 94 club wagon from a buddy I work with. Same motor and according to him about the same mpg. Big step up for me though. No rust, full windows, AC and 1 ton capacity.

Only one reply on the Ford Truck Forum so far.

"I had a 93 with the 302 and didn't get anywhere near that mileage. I'm thinking 12 city and 15 highway tops. People will tell you anything to sell you something. 180k I consider worn out. With that said, if the price is right it could still have several thousand miles left in her and there are a lot of members on this forum with a lot more miles than that on their vans. Check the front end, ball joints especially. Look for uneven tire wear, play in the steering and make sure the van drives straight. Also the trannies don't last forever. It should be the e4od. Decent trans for sure, but 180k see if it has even been rebuilt."
