Does anyone know of any MG's or Austin Healey's for sale in the Fort Myers, FL, area? Im here on vacation and wanted to see what people had down here. More to waste some time really.. Well let me know what you guys find! I looked on craigslist and there is a really nice 67' B on there!

Id like to have that!

All you would be doing is wasting the seller's time as you wouldn't be a serious buyer at all. If you pulled that on me, I would be pretty mad.

If you want to look at cars on your vacation, I'd suggest you look for a forum member in the area, look up any car shows/cruise ins around there, or look for a museum.

the one in the CL ad, that's frey's auto or something... that car has been for sale for almost a year, and since listing it on ebay, they doubled the asking price.

Hey James.

Zach's a grown man and probably has the means to buy something if it strikes his fancy. Who the hell are you to tell him what to do or how to do it? You have a lot of nerve popping off at him like that.

Recess is over, sport.

I have to agree with James on this one. Zach DID say it would be "More to waste some time really.. " And never gave an indication that he wanted to buy anything. I think it was a great idea to contact fellow MGE members or find some Car Clubs to enjoy what is down there.
I don't appreciate it when we have to pack up the family, the dogs, clean the house to a T, and leave for an hour so a family of 6 can come through and look at our three bedroom 1600sq. foot house, with NO intentions of buying it.

I have to agree with James and Paul on this. Unless, you have some interest in buying the vehicle, don't waste the sellers time. Unless you tell him your intentions beforehand on the phone, and he agrees it's alright.

As Paul mentioned there usually is some prep work involved, as well as test driving time, and time standing by the car. This could easily cost someone 1 -2 hours out of their day.

I don't consider going to look at a car at a dealer as being a waste of the dealers time. It's his cost of doing business. I know I've wandered into and around a dealer showroom with no intention of buying. And, yes, Zach's a big boy now.

Derek,

A dealer is different. I was strictly thinking about private sellers.

I think the question is who took a leak in David's baby formula this morning?

Derek, nobody mentioned dealers until you did. I got the impression he meant local sales such as on craigslist or ebay. All I know is that if I made time in my day for someone to come look at a car, and they came by just to kick tires and look at it, with no intention of even thinking of purchasing it, I would be kind of pissed at them for wasting my time. It has happened to me before, and it is frustrating.

Of all the replies, I'm the only one who made a suggestion as to what he could do if he wanted to see some cars, and they were suggestions that I thought were pretty good, but I guess it takes too much effort to look for a forum member, car show, or museum?

For God's sake James that is part of selling a car! you are going to obviously have people that arent going to buy something. Who knows if i liked it enough i would bought it. You cant go telling me what is right and wrong! Do you know what i would have told the guy beforehand about my intentions? NO i dont think you did. SO just calm down.

James, you like looking at all the details. Check the Craigslist listing that Zach posted at the top.

"This item has been posted by-dealer."

Matthew confirmed that in the 3rd post.

Derek, all I have to say to that is "touche". :)

Its funny that David and Derek both referred to you as an adult, but I seem to recall that you are actually in high school or college? Anyway, I'm glad that you have enough money that you can buy a car spontaneously because you liked it enough, but like you said, who knows?

I'm just defensive, so when I say something and someone puts it down, I try to stand my ground. So that being said, yes, as you say, of course dealing with deadbeat tire kickers is a part of selling a car. Whether you want to be one or not is up to you.

"Im here on vacation and wanted to see what people had down here. More to waste some time really"

This means: "I want to waste someone's time since I have not the slightest intention of buying their car."

Nothing in Zach's original post suggested he intended to go to MGB dealers. In fact, there's no such thing--and very few used car dealers are likely to have a 30 year old car. So, why wouldn ANYONE think Zach meant wasn't intending to waste the time of private parties? That's exactly what I thought he meant.

At a dealer, you're entitled to waste a little of the dealer's time. With a private party, you're interfering with someone's private life. That's not at all fair, and I'd be pretty p***ed off, too.

As far as David's reply is concerned, it was rude and I think he owes James an apology.

I know when I'm on vacation I look for cars. Most of the cars have a sign with the price on it so the seller isn't involved. You might get a deal and have to buy it. I picked up a rust free 1964 Pontiac tempest 2 years ago for 100 bucks in Colorado doing what you are doing. Go get em Zach.

James is right on this one. I have been selling cars for a number of years and I would be very pissed if somebody was coming by just to kick tires.
The only one better was when I worked in the Parts Department at a GM dealer and some guy would come in, price 4 or 5 expensive items that we would have to spend time to look up and then he would say "I will be back" to which our reply was "Would you mind signing our be-back book so we will know you were here before" Never got anybody to sign it but made us a feel a little better to know that we had called his bluff. With the way everybody is running short staff nowadays time = $$$$

The questions seem to be (to me):-

If someone comes to look at your car for sale and doesn't buy it, is he wasting your time and just "kicking tires"? Or does it just not measure up?

Has it never happened that someone just goes to look at a car out of curiosity and then they end up buying it?

I'll admit that both scenarios have happened to me. Am I the only one? James? Don? Drew? Anyone?

I just got back from Fl. on vacation and visited my sister in Okeechobee...not far from Ft.Myers. Anyhow, she drivers a 70 Midget I gave her for Christmas three years ago and knows of a couple of very nice clean MGBs there in Okeechobee. If your interested I can call her and get a phone number or two.

Yes, I have gone to look at cars and not bought them. Does that make me a deadbeat tirekicker? No, it doesn't, because I went to see them with the intention of making an offer and with the idea that I might be coming home with a car, not just to go look at it for fun.

The way I interpreted it was he just wanted to see cars. The easiest way to see MGBs in an unfamiliar area is to look for the ones that are advertised for sale. He said himself he just wanted to go by "to waste time" while he is on a vacation. To go look at cars just "to waste time" would indicate to me that he is not a serious buyer, and therefore he would be wasting the seller's time. It is one thing if you see a car on the side of a road and walk up to it to glance at it. It is another thing to ask people where cars for sale are just to arrange a time to go look at them, when you are not a serious buyer. It just seems disrespectful to the seller, but maybe my ethics are screwed up.

No, Zack, they took it at face value. You said you planned to waste other people's time, and you got called on that statement. No one took what you said the wrong way. Might as well face up to what you said.

Yes Zach, Richard raises a good point which many others will agree with: I'm a big jerk, or as you so eloquently put it, a dick head. I must commend you on the maturity of your insult. I would expect nothing less from a "grown man", because that is what you are, right?

Don't take anything I post too seriously. I don't hate you or think you're a total idiot. I reserve that sort of judgement for those people up north with over 6000 posts in less than 2 years...

"You guys are a bunch of dick heads."

This is certainly one of the funnier threads I've read here in quite a while.

Zack, first you say you plan to waste someone's time while you're on vacation in Florida, then you insult James for pointing out you might be wasting someone's time, then you claim you were misunderstood which you clearly were not.

Then, instead of having some class and apologizing, you insult everyone. Here's how you might have handled this, Zack: You type something like this: "I wish I hadn't started this thread. Maybe you're right that I would have been wasting someone's time. Sorry about that." See that wasn't hard, was it?

Instead, you call people here an obscene name. That makes you a classless clown in my book. Think about that for a while. Assuming you think, of course, which has not been evident in this thread.

So much vitriol back and forth.

People in general seem to have a lot of pent up frustration and aggression these days, and it doesn't take much to generate some degree of conflict which then degrades into name calling, innuendos about the other's personality, etc.

Postings that are made with good or innocent intent get turned into hand grenades, by those on both sides.

I think it is more in the way things are said (typed) that what is said.

Wow! in the words of Ron Burgundy, "that got out of hand quickly." Okay, so maybe Zack's plan wasn't so cool. I generally agree that it wasn't, and he should man up and admit as much (and he damn sure shouldn't have dropped the d-bomb.) But seriously, why is this a holy war? I for one, have actually bought cars pretty much spontaneously (not reccommended; it's how you end up with a dubious rubber bumper) but whatever Zack is or isn't this just degenerated pretty bad. Can't we all just get along?
Disclaimer: I know I'm a newbie here, so if that disqualifies me, so be it, but I'm pretty sure flame wars help nobody.
