I just ordered a freeze plug for my motor because the old one seems to leak a little tiny bit. What is the best way to get the old one out and get the new one in. This seems like a simple enough task I just don't want to muck it up.

Chisel through the middle of it, then pluck it out with a screwdriver. Make sure to scrape and clean the hole and shelf of the freeze plug hole well. I used JB Weld to seal mine, then take two ball peen hammers use the rounded end of one hammer against the freeze plug and smack with a second hammer to get a nice rounded dimple in the center of the freeze plug. Hope this helps.
Usually I can't add a thing to your posts because they are so thorough Hap, but in this case let me add this: "Wear safety goggles"
Ok thank you. I thought it would be that simple. JB weld to seal it? is there anything else that you guys would recomend to seal it?
Anyone know off hand what size the freeze plug is? I've got a seeping one.
Blast - I thought I was the only person that used a chisel to get 'em out!
On the double hammer thing - I don't do it because I was told in shop class, at the tender age of 13, that you should never hit a hammer with a hammer - it can make them chip!
I just hit the Welch plug with the ball end of the hammer!

Haha, funny you should mention that I always heard that myth as well, but long after I had already been doing it, they recently (in the last year) put that myth to the test on Mythbusters, the TV show, and tried every way possible to get the two hammer to chip or break, even hardened them beyond what they had been new, couldn't never even get anything close to the hammers failing, so they declared it a myth busted, I love that show, those guys are nuts :) So hammer to hammer away Eric :)
