Rebuilding the front end on my 74B, new springs, shocks, all new poly bushings, incl subframe pads. The kingpins are tight, no slop, everything else is gone to be stripped and powdercoated except the spindles. (because the kingpins are still assembled) My question is...can I soak them in degreaser and clean them up? Are there any rubber parts, seals in there that should not be dunked in "purple power" to remove the bulk of the grease?

Yep, there are three O rings. One at the base of the spindle,and one on each end of the dust tube.

A bit on the seals shouldn't be a big issue, but I would let them sit in solvent for any length of time. Spray some on and scrubbing just to be wiped off isn't going to hurt them.

Since you've gone that far, why note take the top nut off the kingpin and take everything apart to soak. You'll be able to do a much better job of cleaning and you'll be able to replace the seals Tom mentioned.

I would disassemble and clean completely. Then you can check fit, with that much old grease it would be hard to tell.

So if I pull them apart, will I have to replace the o rings or could they possibly be reused if they appear to be in good shape? I know this depends on their condition once I get them out, I guess I just don't want to find out that I have "need to's" along with my "might as well's"

Trey,
If you are worried about the dust tube o-rings, don't. Most experienced builders use RTV instead. Just a schmear around the tube ends upon installation makes for a better seal. The oring at the base of the kingpin is pretty generic from a hardware store. You'll be well served to clean the old grease out and push some fresh grease through the zerks to clean them. Then test the kingpin fit when clean and dry to get a better assesment of wear. Also, watch for discoloration on the kingpin itself, usually at the lower bearing portion. That's often the worst for corrosion, pitting, etc. through the hardened surface. You've done most of the hard work so far. Be safe.
