Hey All,

I'm getting a clunk form my right=front wheel, suspect a wheel bearing. What size socket fits the nut securing the hub (wire wheels, if that matters) to the axel? I'll have to make a run to either harbor freight or Sears latter today...

Thanks!

John

I believe that's a 1-1/8" nut.

1 5/16" on cars with Rostyles.

I think it is 1 5/16" Takes a thin wall socket. Regular sockets are too fat to fit in the hole.. .................

John's car in his photo has wires, but that's interesting info that the Rostyle cars have larger spindle nuts.

Front spindle nuts are the same size for wire wheel or disc wheel hubs, they should be 1 1/8". The rear wheel hub nuts are 1 5/16".

I suspect a bad spline on wheel or hub.

I just went out to the shop to check and guess what?
My 1971 and two 1974.5 cars are deformed. All three have Rostyles and the spindle nut is 1 5/16".

Splines are fine. Had the wheel off last week, and looked at them. There is a little play with "clunk" when I shake the hub.

So, 2 sizes? 1 1/8" for the fronts, 1 5/16" for the rears?

John,

If you have not rebuilt the lower a-arms the bolt that goes throw the lower spinal pivot usually elongates the holes in the a-arm, which will cause a clunk when you brake.
