Hello Folks
I have been doing a front to back inspection on my '65 B the past couple of days replacing air and oil filters, grommets and most other rubber related bits that looked worn. I searched for the fuel filter only to discover the car doesn't have one! Huh. I decided to do some more reading and discovered that earlier B's were not equipped with them. Instead the fuel tank outlet had a screen and the pump has a rudimentary filter built in. Go figure!
How does one ensure that the fuel on these earlier cars is kept clean without resorting to putting an after-market filter downstream of the fuel pump?

I modified the metal line in the engine compartment to accept the inexpensive clear Fram filters sold at Walmart for a couple bucks.

Gee Travis the puppy has made 47 years without one.
What does that tell you?
Heck if I know. Four years ago I put a cheap filter on my 63 like Rod.
I had been fighting crap at the needle valves.
I put one in right after the fuel pump and before the metal line under the car.
Me too as per Rod. If you search fuel pumps you'll come accross discussions about the o/e SU pump having a filtering capability and as such a separate filter was deemed superflous. That hasn't stopped some of us since adding one between the pump and carbys - you don't need one between tank and pump. Here you go some extra reading.

Lee,
I like this idea. It keeps the plumbing under the bonnet original and you have the additional protection of a filter between the pump and the carbs. Do you have a picture of this?
Bob
i have one before the fuel pump and another one before the carbs....the carb one was there when I got the car and I put the one before the aftermarket pump as the instructions insisted
The picture does not show much. It is a tight fit between the fuel pump and the hard fuel line. What I did was looped the fuel hose with the filter at the top.

Roy, even though I'd never want to remove my filters, I still like that scheme because it's easily reversible.
Consider that the jet that the fuel must pass thru is 0.90". That is pretty large compared to most crap that comes out of the tank or would get past the plastic screen in the tank, or the one in the SU pump. Photo below of what the OE tanks came with. Not all aftermarket tanks come with one of these or even baffles - you get what you pay for.
I know you don't have to change them often - but I'd still want mine located where I didn't have to get under the car to change it.

If you have a SU pump this is a bad idea! The pump is quite capable of handling crap from your tank, what it doesn't like is running dry.
A clogged filter before the tank can end up stuffing your pump if the filter clogs.

A topic I started some time ago.
It still works.
