Yesterday, Mrs. Smirkinwill and I tackled the job of replacing the fuel tank on her 69 MGB. And, after only six hours of laying in the driveway, we did it. No leaks, fuel gauge works, hesitation gone.
The old tank had a few pin-holes in the top right (looking from the rear of the car) which I figured had to be there as the last time I filled up, gas was running down the side of the tank and the smell was kind of strong.
Got the kit from Bob at Brit-Tek, coated it with truck bed liner spray a few weeks ago. There was one troublesome nut that took most of the day to wrangle free. It was the nut closest to the muffler. Seems it just spun on the stud. What we ended up doing was using a flat crow-bar, nail remover tool to exert downware pressure on the nut (my job) while the Mrs. worked the ratchet. Painfully slow progress, but finally it came off.
So, on to the master cylinder next weekend (I hope)!
Just thought I'd share a success story for a change.

Please let me know how the MC goes, I think it is due on mine, Dennis70
Feels good getting that done, doesn't it?
Coating it with bed-liner was a good idea. I should have done that with mine when I replaced it. Hopefully there won't be a "next time" with this car, but if there is I'll do the same.

I used rust paint and undercoating. I did not think of bedliner and hope I will not have to redo the process.
I'm gonna get a new fuel tank.
Why bedliner/undercoating? Is it rust protection?

Prevents rock chipping and the start of rust. I have a tendancy to remove my tanks every so often to work on the car (welding and such) and that leads to scratches..that lead to rust...
Here is how I did mine, back in May:

I used undercoating or i also think it is called gravel guard. Goes on thik and is chip resistent. But i guess one method is as good as an other, i almost used Por 15 but was afraid it would chip if road debrit would hit it.
POR15'ed my tank. not a single chip in 5 years. It is really the top of the tank that matters. I also waxoyled the top of the tank in addition to the por15.
prepared right, por15 is a great choice as well
