The builders have been busy for the last few days! The holes on the back wall (opposite the roll-up door) are going to be closed in for windows -- they're open right now because they're convenient for the builders to walk back & forth through for supplies. The hole to the right on the gable end wall will be another window, and the hole nearest the roll-up door will be a personnel door....

Rob,
Looks great! Nice clean frame. Looks like you used a structural ridge so you can take advantage of the height of the garage. Are you going to build a loft or put in a lift?
Yup -- the beam is there so that I have a clear space all the way up to the ridge. Eventually (once my wallet has recovered), there will be a lift. No time soon, though.... :-( They still need to put in collar ties, but those will only cost me about 6" headroom. I'll still have about 13' in the center, going down to 8' at the walls.
I'm really pleased with the work these guys are doing. If you're in Raleigh and are considering a project, I can't recommend them highly enough!
Lookin' really good there Mon! When is the party? :-)

Rob,
With the structural ridge, you don't need the collar ties. There is no way for the rafters to push the walls out at the plate. If your using UBC standards for your engineering, then you can leave them in for inspection, take them out after inspection and use the extra space for the loft.
Ask your contractor about it!
The problem is the support for the ridge beam at the other end. The original plan was for a post (there's a temporary post there now) to support it. But the builder said, "You know, we could put in collar ties and lose that post." I said, "That sounds like a fine idea."
Here's a photo of the other end. The existing wall will be removed (it's non-loadbearing).
Are you going to Heat and AC? I built my wall units in. The one in the shop is programable to come on when ever you want. Either Heat or AC. My Electric bill is about $25 more a month. Just an idea.
Looks fantastic! Nothing like a new garage. Here's a pic of the one I had built this summer. 22' x 26' (so I can turn the B sideways and push it to the back wall for the winter). This replaced a 1930's one car garage - with the bump-out added in the 60's when cars got longer. Plus, it had a lovely carport attached - with a flat roof so it would rot out every 3 years.
Wow!!!
Nice... you'd be able to put in a floor lift and put a least Six b's in that baby.

Rob : Up here in Canada you would be required to put in the collar ties to evenly distribute the snow load . If you get a good wind the snow might only build up on one side and could cause you problems without them . I guess you don't have to worry about that in N.C. By what I can see ,It looks like you got a great framing ob there .

Nice looking garage, but as a Building Inspector I wasn't thrilled with "Bills73bgt"'s comment about leaving in the collar ties until after the inspection is over. Collar ties serve a purpose, but you will lose much more than 6" of headroom if they are installed properly. If you divide the area between the doubled top plates and the ridge, the collar ties should be positioned below the upper third.
That looks great - those are some quick framers - and it looks like a pretty tidy job!!
