if it is like earlier cars (it may not be!):
Inspect the moss catalog diagram.
If you don't have one, get one before proceeding. Period.
There's a plastic bushing at the bottom of the lever and there's a spring-loaded tensioner at the top that pops out of the side of the housing (at about 4 o'clock). either could be messed up, both are likely messed up.
replace those and, save other issues, you'll be good.
In addition the special springs and 3 shoulder bolts that cap the shift lever pivot ball must be in good shape and properly assembled.
Replace the plastic bushing which is probably non existant. If that goes, the shift lever will be very sloppy. Moss or Vic Brit has them. Easy cheap fix. Paul
Moss Catalog.... Pg. #38..... Item # 114...... 461-110 $6.80 BUSH, shift lever.
A little tricky to install, put it on the end of the shift lever, then crawl under the car and feel for it above the "Remote control shaft" and push it down into the hole in the top of the "Remote control shaft". A little grease on the outside of the bushing helps it slip in easily.

A little tricky? I tried this technique for what seemed like an hour when I put in the OD last month and still couldn't get the darn thing to go in properly. Woudn't go in straight. I suppose I will try again at some point, when I come up with a jig to driver her home straight. for now I am putting up with a sloppy shifter....
I do have the Moss catalog and Vt Br.
Also picked up haynes manual..
We have 1980 w/ 4 spand the 1977 4 sp w/ od
I'm trying to keep the cars as close asd possable for parts and ect..
The weekend I will have to try to fix the shifter..
That is if all I need is a plastic bushing..
I thought that I was going to have tare the shift tower off and builb up shifting rods or somethine..
If it was a old Harley trans I would had it fixed weeks ago..
The LBC are a little new to me
