'70 BGT stock engine, non od.

Any tips/thoughts on removing the gearbox while the engine remains in the car?

I don't believe that it's possible. If it is possible I believe that it would be extremely difficult. Good luck!

If you can get to all the bolts on the bellhousing (IF) than I think you can undo the driveshaft (forward), move out of the way. Undo bellhousing bolts and slide tranny back till mainshaft clears the clutchplate/dish, than tilt down and slide forward. Boy, I don't know, thats going to be real tight to slide out now that I envision it. Not to mention the bear in lining up the mainshaft when it comes time to put back in. Forget it!! Pull the motor too.

it is supposed to be possible. but it is very difficult and takes a very strong person. or two.

you have to move the box back a little then rotate it 45 degrees then back more and out the front down and forward to get it out of the small cross member, etc.

my grandson and I wasted a weekend trying to do this. we just could not lift the transmission and manipulate it simultaneously while lying on out backs under the car.. just not strong enough

I guess if you really want to have the engine remain in the car it would best to throw it in the trunk and then remove the gearbox :)

I've done it, don't bother, beg, borrow or steal some kind of lifting device, a block and tackle and tree works, and pull the engine.

Thanks all, I went ahead a started the engine/trans removal. I wanted to avoid pulling the engine as I had it out recently, rebuilt it and put it all back real pretty like only to have the trans pop out of gear a couple times.

You could do it like the hack that worked on mine before I got it. Took a sawzall to the rear Xmember then stick welded it back in. BTW, what's DPO stand for? I think that's what he was.
