I was going to post this later in the day but after seeing pics of the lower control arm of that car that hit the manhole cover I decided not to wait.

Most of you point out that the lower trunion was most likely siezed. I diligently grease the king pins on my GT at least one every 3 months (at each seasons end / begining). I've gone through at least 2 (now 3) grease guns. The latest one crapped out because the threads on the pump head stripped. Of course it went south after I got 2 fittings done.

So the reason for the post is:

What grease gun are you using? Pros & Cons etc.

I'd like to buy a good one at a reasonable price and as always your advice is what is going to steer me in the right direction.

I have had exactly the same problem! Am now looking for a quality gun that won't bust apart when the pressure builds!

I bought a good grease gun from Tractor Supply. I'm not sure if it's the exact model but it's similar.
Here's the link.

My last one, bought about 7 years ago, came from NAPA. I don't remember the price but it says "Made in USA" on it.

x2. Pistol grip with flexible hose is the way to go. More control of the gun that way....

I use a pneumatic grease gun attached to my compressor that I bought at Sears.

I hate it when the gun still has grease in it but just won't pump it out. Something hangs up inside. Happens sometimes with a new full cartridge of grease too. PITA:drinking::drinking:

Sears,,had it for about 50 yrs.
Grease guns wont pump air .
use two flex hoses connected by a 1/8 npt coupling ( std grease gun size )
You can mix some anti seize with grease at the top of gun for suspension greasing ..

The Mega Gun is exactly what I'm looking for (I Think). The pistol grip is the key. No stress on the pump body which in hindsight causes load on the threads that keep failing.

Does it use large or small cartridges? Or is the typoe that you hand pack? I just bought a 4 pack of small cartridges before my gun blew up. I'd hate to waste the 3 that I have left over.

Tim,
I believe it uses large cartridges. Looks to be a 2 1/4" OD barrel.
Now that I think of it, my grease gun doesn't have a pistol grip. It has a lever. I have to hold onto the body and pump the lever. Still works good as it has a heavy duty cast head that screws onto the body.

Sears sells the Mega Gun too. I'm going to stop off and order it on-line from the store to take advantage of their free warehouse - to - store delivery.

As for my left over grease cartridges I'll just empty the tubes into the Mega Gun as it can either be cartridge or bulk loaded.

Thanks to all.

Same here. Works great. Sounds great.

When the grease gun has grease but won't pump, that's usually just an air bubble. Unscrew the head a little, and you should get grease coming out pretty soon. As for the best guns, I have always just gone with the cheaper ones, because they are cast iron or steel heads. The aluminum strip out too easily like you all have said, and most of the expensive ones are aluminum. I like lever over pistol grip, just because you can put out more pressure. I buy the 10-15 dollar ones and have never had a problem with them coming apart under really high pressure. I use ours on a lot of farm equipment, and it's not uncommon to really have to get some pressure behind a fitting to make it take grease again on equipment that sits for extended periods of time. Last one I bought was from Tractor Supply. On sale for $10. So far so good.

I use Lincoln's Model 1133 pistol-grip grease gun:
