why do so many people feel the need to give snide and grumpy replies to questions on the forums on here?
either its someone giving their opinion as an unquestionable fact.
or shooting someone down who dares to ask a question that may well have been asked before to be told to go and hunt through the archives for an hour to find the answer.
its getting to the stage members are gonna think twice before asking advice.so to all the old grumps, haters, keyboard tough guys etc......way to go making members feel part of the community.and to those same people,i know its really hard to imagine that one day you may need someones help or advice(slim chance with you being so perfect),and youll get exactly what you deserve.ignored or shot down.

Hmmm, perhaps an example or two could bolster your opinion?
This forum is just like any other internet forum. Ask a mundane question and you're sure to get one or two snide remarks in reply. Same sort of thing likely happens if you're having a drink at happy hour with your buds(mates for you UK folks).
Pretend it's happy hour and have another drink and chill.
Not everyone wants all the info given, or the opinions either. And I think some folks just feel that their experience is as valid as anyone else's - they have done the work with no ill effects, but not always in the way the majority sees as a consensus. But you are right, there is often an edge to many things that doesn't need to be there. And you must admit, much is just simply chain yanking to get a rise out of someone. Not too different than when we were lads in the school yard, really.

brilliant.absolute genius.and sadly i recognise myself from time to time in more than a few of the listed warriors.thanks for the link
This site is very diverse and has as much humour as grumpiness....I suppose that and the personalities make this a very funny and engaging site....learning from others here is actually very interesting
...Princess,...wild guess here but I think most of us would recognize ya daytime, nighttime, twine time....it's the hat me thinks....B)-

Well, Paul, that explains a lot about the internet in general and what a universal trait it is and has been - since before AOHell. Thanks for that bit of insight.
This place really isn't that bad compared to the Vette Forum. A lot of DO A SEARCH!! over there and some other nasties. I just try to overlook it and go on. There are more nice guys than smartasses anyway.
R sometimes refer them to the archives when I don't know the answer but remember seeing it sometime in the past 10 or 12 years. Infrequently I remember the old thread clearly enough to find it quickly and post a link to it.
It's also very obvious at times that numerous people either don't read the earlier responses to a thread they reply to, and restate the obvious, don't understand the English language, have never actually worked on an MGB before, don't bother to realize, or don't know that what may be applicable to their 80Bs brake system isn't applicable to the 65 which is the subject of the thread, and/or are simply trying to run up their post counts.
It all adds to the fun and merriment here.B)-
Why? Beats me. But it gives you insight into who you might want to pay more attention to.
I usually try to answer a question to the best of my ability, then conclude with "there's an article in the library" or "if you want to see other opinions, try the search feature." Newbies aren't always aware of the feature of this site.

You DO have to re-read your postings there a few times before you hit the post button.. But as with a lot here, they expect you to know the answers without asking at times....

The subject of someone complaining because a member has asked a question that was previously asked, lack of grammer, spelling ect has come up before. I fail to see how any of that can impact anyone into writting a negative responce. I would think if a individual knew the answer he or she could simply answer the question or skip the post. Personally ive read most of these threads and i think some folks take it upon themselves to be the keepers of the forum,i also think some might enjoy the status of being in a position to knock others. If in fact you were refering to the OT forum thats somewhat different. Post a innocent thread about religion, illegal guns killing law enforcement officers, poverty, sexual orentation, what started the civil war, unions, racial issues and just wait and see the replys

not the OT forum per se,steve, but all across the topics.ive had it several times and saw it being done to others.lets say for example someone asks what kind of spark plugs should they put in their 76 B,then if i know the answer straight off then ill tell them what type to use and why im giving this answer.but then someone else pipes up with"hmph that question was asked 9 years ago.people should just go look in the archives."...ok,thats that persons right to not type an answer to help the member.however, that then makes me question why that member is even here.obviously not to give people advice.(someone asked, they didnt help, not only that but they made a point of stating that theyre not gonna help either.)i bet theyre a real hoot at classic car shows.i wouldnt even be surprised if they drive by a stranded mg owner, broken down at the roadside,in their own mg,shouting"you shouldve checked the archives!"as they pass by.
theres enough ignorant people in the world, without then coming on here too
I run a travel forum and whilst it does get repetitive replying to common questions like "do I need a visa to go to Thailand", I usually answer the question as if it's the first time it's been asked. Takes no time at all.
The way around it is to build a FAQ, which I am currently doing for my forum. Then have it prominently displayed at the top. Once it's in place you can just direct people to the relevant thread drawn from the FAQ.

As a citizen of the UK for tourist stays of no longer than 30 days, a visa is not required if arriving by air. However, there exists a requirement of an onward plane ticket within that window of 30 days, which is rarely enforced by Thai immigration but is occasionally enforced by your airline. Arriving by land from a bordering country, a visa is not required for stays of no longer than 15 days. For longer stays, and/or those of another nature other than tourism, a visa would be required, gained in advance from your nearest Thai embassy.
;)

That would be from the nearest consulate, not embassy. You will only find embassies in capital cities. It is consulates that issue visas. Embassies do have consular sections from which visas are issued.

Do I need a visa to travel from Kentucky to Michigan? (I'd be passing through Indiana, and you know how THOSE people can be...)
They still sell beer on Sunday in Michigan?

Amazing how this thread turned into a mini thread for everyone to bitch about their pet hates and ended up with nothing to do with what the original was all about....thats funny

You probably weren't around when Beano was haunting the site. I for one call attention to the archives and library to newbes so they won't have to wait for a response that has 10,000 answers and 5000 threads already.
You can feed the poor man a fish to teach him how to built a net to catch his own. I believe you'll find overall the majority of folks on this site are extremely helpful and giving.
One thing I personally have noticed is that while we all speak the same language it does not always translate the same way.
Wind yer necks in, bunch of moaners. :I3:

LOL - I was just continuing the running joke on the thread! That post about people not bothering the read the thread was originally written by Anthony. It was then reposted by Paul, then Anthony again, then Chris... and then me!
I guess you didn't "pay attention" and read the thread, and missed the running joke about people, er, not bothering to read the thread... beautiful irony! ;)
Depends on whether it is authentic Thai or not. If it is, then you will need your visa. If not, then you will need your Visa.

Dammit, Steve! I love that stuff! Closest Thai restaurant is about 70 miles away! I'll take my visa, and put it on my Visa. B-)

We've got 7 or 8 Thai places within 5 miles of here. In fact, it's probably easier to get a plate of Pad Thai than a bowl of gumbo around here.
Steve, Wyatt, Karl....
Tempting me with food's not fair. All the good stuff.
Hmmmm. Gumbo...
Tasty stuff :P The top dish was squid with garlic and pepper (TONS of garlic), the lower dish was baby clams in chilli sauce. Both dishes about $3 each from tourist restaurants. Squid was fresh and cooked perfectly - not rubbery at all.
If you don't mind the pollution, cockroaches, crappy plastic stools and possible unexpected future bowel movements, street food is available here for less than $1 a plate. Six years ago that was $0.50 a plate until our currencies stumbled. Still pretty cheap though ;)
Highschool biology, 1969, we dissected squid. The teacher brought an electric skillet and we fried the mantles with a little salt and pepper. Was kind of like bacon, but with a little seafood taste, IIRC. Lots of the kids wouldn't try it for some reason! 8-)

What, you used to pay less than a dollar for your pollution, cockroaches, crappy plastic stools and possible unexpected future bowel movements?
LUXURY!
We pay a fortune for those in Australia, now!
