I haven't got the guts to do that, I admit it. I like my feet on the ground. But it is sure cool to watch.
I couldn't stand near the edge, never mind jump off.
Good video though. (tu)
What if his arms give out? What if his suit fails? I guess you just open the chute at that point if that happens...
At some of the altitudes (AGL) he was at I don't think reaching in for a ripcord, or whatever opens a chute, would be an option. Any loss of lift would have dropped him like a stone, or spun him in.
You're right though. I'm guessing he knew how long the descent would take and practised from an aircraft until he had the necessary endurance, plus some.
What he is doing is called base jumping. Short for buildings aerials structures or earth.
The guy that invented the sport bounced doing it. This guy will too if he keeps pushing his luck.
I skydived for 10 years and I have a greater respect for life than to do what this guy is doing.
I've strapped on a chute, but the flames would have to be lickin' at my a$$ before I'd jump. I'd sooner fly into the trees.
Funny...I flew for over 37 years and still got wobbly knees while pre-flighting the beast's wings and engines.
I'm sure this guy knows the risks, just like all the others that do high-risk adventures. What to do when things don't go according to plan.........that separates the men from the boys.....and probably the living from the dead.
Everyone enjoys their lives just a little bit differently. Not my thing but I like the video none-the-less.
Have seen one similar that lasted longer. Got to admire the guts of these guys but I can't really understand the need to do something like this. I ride a bike....sometimes too fast with my ear too close to the ground.....but this goes way beyond that!
Here's something similar. This guy, Yves Rossy, has been doing this for some time.

Fantastic Video, but he's got bigger ones than I do. I like to fly but
that is way beyond what I feel necessary for a thrill.
Beautifully done though and the filming was marvelous.

...Scott I was a member of the MSU sport parachute club (Michigan State) I got in just enough jumps to get my card, then when the season was almost over a young girl got into a freefall right smack into the ground....these were the days of army surplus chutes and no automatic deployment gadgets....I never jumped again. An old friends wife has some old 8mm film of us back in the early 70's...
These guys are more than a little insane: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4U6T_BB1N8&feature=player_embedded
