A few weeks ago when I couldn't solve the poor running with my HIF4 carbs on my 73B roadster I took it in to a local mechanic to get help. He found the needle on the front carb was loose and intermittently dropping downward.
He told me that the needles had two positions and he reset both mine to a higher position in the piston, instead of even with the bottom of the piston.
Since that episode the car is again running really well. Plugs are clean and lifting the carb pistons give the required momentary rpm increase followed by a drop in speed.
I would like to know if the mechanic was right about carb needles having higher and lower set position options.
Thanks,
BH

There is only one correct position, no optional one. That's flush with the groove in the piston.
There are alot of guys out there used to the HS carbs, and not so much with the HIF's, and they get such details wrong( the HS's don't have the groove, maybe that's why he thought that)
