Hey B-gang,
Has anyone successful replaced the bushing on a Lucas MGB cooling fan to a bearing, and if so, what bearing did you use? One of mine just stared squealing this morning. A shot of grease got it to stop, but it is just a matter of time before it gets worse. The motor is fine and draws the right amperage. It seems a shame to have to replace the whole motor at $70+ for a bushing. Also is the bushing alone available if a right fitting bearing isn't?

Regards,
Ken

look in the junk yards....later and replacement fan motors had a bearing there and not a bushing.....you can see the difference by looking at the end...no need to reinvent the wheel.

You can also take it apart and then match the bearing or bushing at your friendly neighborhood King Bearing or equivalent store. I've always been able to source bushes and bearings for my early MkI MGB (67) so, I would think that you can too.

What you don't want to do is run it too long and have it grind itself into oblivion. You know what that squealing noise is, right?

Good Luck,

B

Brian,
I was sure it was the bushing squealing until you asked the question. Do you have another theory?

If it is only the bushing squealing you'll be able to get more life out of it by removing the motor and setting it with the shaft upwards and soaking the shaft with light oil, allowing it to soak down through the bush. If it's possible to get to the other end, do the same there.

Keep testing it and keep oiling till the squeal goes.
