MB.s BGT in NYC

I am interested in the history of this item. If it was a dealer option, what year was it offered? Any photos? thanks.

I've never seen on on an MG but I put one on my 1980 Saab 900. There were a few companies making them back then and whether it was dealer installed or not was up to the dealer.

GT rear window louvres? 1970s aftermarket.

Ya know, if anyone has a set of those they want to part with..........

Yes. Window louvers. A whole industry spawned by the Lamborghini Miura!

dealer options were up to the dealer...they'd source any and everything they could make a dime on, and ignore you if there was a warranty issue because it wasn't "factory"

this louver was the sort of thing Marion Weber's MG Mitten and other purveyors of the day used to sell.

find a 60s-70s road and track and you'll see hundreds of ads for the like.

That would be fun (and somewhat practical) on a GT.
Had one on a '83 Datsun 200SX. Actually they were a pretty good idea.

Sold that car with 385,000 miles on it. Original strong running engine.

One just ended on Ebay today. Didn't save it and not sure if it sold, but I do remember saying to myself, "Who would want that on their GT?" I guess Mike would.
Maybe it will be re-listed. I just did a search and nothing.

OK, so I'm a fan of the tacky 70s. :D

I'll go hunting for that one on Ebay, the only ones I've seen in the past were in the UK.

You don't have to be such a Richard Cranium Derek. :(

I had them on my '82 RX-7 and they were very cool at the time. Not so much now I'm afraid. It's an accessory that went out with big hair and PacMan. :D Peace brother!

Yeah, lay off the Pac-Man jokes here.

It's not politically correct and I won't stand for it.

I think its really cool. I'd put it on my GT

Thay sorta went with the reflective mylar windshield toppers with the name of your car. I did have one of those but the louvers never turned me on.

Look good on a 76 Toyota Celica. :-)

Gee, I haven't seen those window shades in years. Basically venetian blinds for a car.
I had a pair on some car or other -- I think it was my old MGB-GT. Hated them b/c they
made wiping off the back window a pain. Never understood the point myself. If you want to keep the heat out, get the window tinted. What if it flies off at speed? You'll hurt someone!

Had a set 9 years ago and traded them for something............

Tint the window,... those things are tacky/clunky

Idea was to keep the sun from baking the interior. Used to be all the rage on anything with a big back hatch glass. Camaros ect. I had a Dodge Daytona Shelby I fixed & sold that had them. They were hinged at the top so you could lift them & clean the glass. Haven't noticed them on anything for years.

I had one on my BGT back in 1973. I got sick of it and trashed it. My dad had one on his Pinto and his Plymouth Horrizen as well. They worked good to keep the sun out but were a reap pain to clean the glass underneath. You could not give me one now

Alan Bachelder has a set on his GT, He had his car at Sonoma last summer. I will look to see if I have a picture somewhere - they actually look pretty good. I had a set on my Accord hatchback (I forgot the year) and they did keep the back of the car cooler and kept the carpet and seat tops from fading / burning out.

Mar 26, 2008 07:22:26
mowog1

I had a set on my 1978 Datsun 280Z.

Definitely kept the heat down, did NOT impair vision, and kept the rear carpet from turning from its original black to that sunbleached brown colour that frequently happens over time.

Mine was made of aluminum and was hinged on the top, which made cleaning the window a breeze.

Made no noise at speed (and with that car, speed was almost always a factor!)...and I was NEVER afraid that it would "fly off".

Wouldn't mind having a set for my B/GT...geeze...Rochester,IL wasn't even that far from me!

:)

Sorry about the Pac Man comment. I loved Pac Man too back in the day! :D

Oh, they will be back. I have a hunch that those who have installed A/C will either opt for shades or one of the newer types of window tint material.

I had them on my 676 Firebird. Easy to clean under, they had locks and were hinged at the top. Unlock, Lift and clean the window. It was black, and I blacked out all the brightwork. I think it looked pretty good.

Didn't have to worry about not being able to see out the tinted window and kept the sun and prying eyes from what was in the back seat.
