Hi All,
I have just removed my head, in an attempt to find the cause of the vibration in the engine, before going the full monty and pulling the lump.
What I found is, what I believe, is the signs of a warped head, see photo.
Also could someone tell me if the radius in the combustion chamber, in the valley of the heart, is adequate?
The colour of the deposits indicates that the engine has been running rich, however, lifting each piston, in the carbs, produced a momentary increase in revs, then died, indicating a correct mixture. I'm confused.
Thanks
Herb

That sure looks like there was an exchange of intake and exhaust gasses between #2 and #3. The head may have an eroded spot there from that bypassing. Surface the head, check the block and use the Payen black gasket. You'll be fine. basil 707.762.0974 basiladams@yahoo.com
You can straight edge check the head, that will give you your answer, what you are looking for is with the straight edge in place you cannot fit a .002" feeler gauge under the straight edge agaisnt head's deck anywhere on the head, if it passes that test, a head gasket will seal, if not, get a clean up resurface cut, normally .010" or less will clean the surface up. Follow Basil's advice to get the Payen black head gasket, it by far is the best of the MGB head gaskets.
Herb, I love you!
Yours is a succinct, well written post, but it opens up new worlds for sarcastic responses and innuendo. The lead in, "I have removed my head" was the hook for me.>:D<
Good thing that I am a little pressed for time this morning.:)

Doesn't look rich to me. Or if it is, so is mine. Better a little too rich than a little too lean. The plugs would be a better indicator. If you're really anxious about it, invest in a colortune. I love mine. I think I just like seeing the combustion in my chambers. :-)
As far as warp, I have nothing more to add to the sage advice of the Sions of Lucas herein.
Just, when you put it back on, follow the tightening pattern religiously, and retorque after 100 miles.
I used CopperKote last time I put on my head. I haven't had it off since, so I don't know if it helped, or if it will have permanently glued my head on.
