So, I noticed that my interior heater hoses were very dry and cracked (defroster tubes). When I removed them, I thought something was missing. Moss and VB show a straight pipe with an elbow of which are missing on my heater outlet.
The question is if these are necessasry? Has anyone looked at their's and noticed they're missing too?
Thanks
Scott
ps/ the picture was taken looking through where the radio goes.

I guess if your existing defroster tubes are long and flexible enough, then you would not need the rubber 90 degree bend fittings that are supposed to go in those holes. Maybe when you bend the tubing up to the defroster outlets, the tube will collapse a bit from too tight a bend and slow down the flow of warm air to the windshield?
In the huge pile of parts that I've acquired there seem to be two sorts of defroster tubes. They differ at one end. Some end with a smooth piece of tubing with a couple of small tabs that seems to fit and catch directly on the heater box. That's what I've used in mine. The others look as though they might fit the elbow pieces, but I haven't got any of those to check out.
This should be the inner structure of the complete heater system in cross section. Hopefully it helps to see where the air goes for all functions. If someone has better information for how the later cars were constructed in order to obviate the need for the tubes, let us know how it is accomplished.
