Installing a Weber Dgv carburetor on a 1978 Mg midget 1500. How do you get at the bottom two(2)? I think-- bolts? I have the carb , the heatshield, and the heatshield bracket and the top intake manifold bolts off. What tool do you use? Thanks Jim

Jim,
I just installed my weber two weeks ago. I had to shave down a socket to bear minimum yet maintain some strength. I had to use 1/4 in extention, universal and socket. With the carb and heat sheld off, I was able to them between the two. I would not say it solved the issue. I am talking very difficult and long. Turning the nut a 16th of an inch at a time and you can't see what your doing. Totally by touch. Putting them back was a little easier due to the fact there is a little more room. You will also need to check for clearance with the exhaust manifold. I had to shave off the insides of the studs that are located at the ends. They have a bolt hole in them. I will admit, although the bottom two are tight, they are not as tight as they probably should be. Also of note! The linkage setup that comes with the carb is just not right. You will have to modify it. The geometry is off. Even after modifying it to the minimum geometry at the carb, I still did not have complete throw on the carb. The distance to the floor board was not great enough to get full throttle. I had to modify the angle and cut the pedal rod to gain full throttle, yet keep the pedal at a angle and heigth that was acceptable. Let me know if this helps. I am sure others will provide more information.

Thanks Jay: Did you shave the socket on the sides or make it shorter or both? I may have some more question as I get further along-not a quick job. Jim
Hey Guys,
I'm fairly new to MGs also. Just curious about why you went to webbers instead of SUs. (More power? easier to adjust? better fuel milage?)
Tom
I was able to get to those nuts under the exhaust manifold using a Craftsman, others make them too I am sure, universal socket. If you use a socket and a universal the two piece are too long and the socket will not stay on the nut if you can get it on the nut to start with. But this socket is all one, the socket is shallow and the bend in the universal is much closer to the socket so the clearance is better. I was able to get to mine with that. The stud usually comes out with the nut rusted to it, at least mine did.
P.S. I love my weber! It was one of the best things I did to my 78. The other was to get rid of all the emission stuff. The car starts easy and runs much smoother.
Jim,
I did both, shorten and thinner. Good luck! Jere's suggestion sounds good also.

Got it guys. I used a socket and universal joint and a open end wrench.thanks
