Hubby is off fishing again and I've been washing and cleaning my 80. I noticed the inside of the tail pipe is very black and when I rubbed my finger in there it is like soot---not wet but dry and does stick to my finger.

Car runs great but is this something the hubby needs to fix to make it even better when he gets back?

Your turn :)

That depends. Is he fishing in a boat, or is he on the shore?

Naomi, how is that infection that your husband had? Is it all gone?

Black is OK as long as it isn't oily. Many times a black tail pipe indicates a rich mixture. How are the spark plug readings?

I prefer to see it a very dark brown providing the spark plugs still read normal.

Funny but my wife never asks me to fix her car.

She always says things like:
Did you take the garbage out?
Get a roast out of the freezer in the garage. (When I am just falling asleep)
Who made a mess in the bathroom?
Don't touch anything! (When I came in from the shop)
Did you pick up the Chihuahua poo? (Up to 6 of the little beasts now)
Could you bring the ??? up? (Said just as I reach the top of the stairs)

About all tail pipes have been black since they tood the lead out of gas.

You're right, John D. I remember the "good ol' days" when a chalky white tailpipe was a pretty good indicator you had done your tune up right.

If he's in a boat, everything should be OK..........

Yeah, the inside of my pipe is black as the ace of spades.

its blue

2nd. what Frank said.
BTW Was at Heathrow airport this past Nov.on a layover. Ended up talking with a gentleman who built MG's. He told me SU's were made to run rich. Coments anyone? Joe

SUs "made to run rich". The guy doesn't know what he is talking about.

Naomi, it also depends on your driving habits. Short runs to the 7-11 don't allow the engine to warm up and come fully off of choke so the mix will be rich and the pipe more sooty than not. Under normal ambient temperates I figure generally that it takes about 12 to 15 miles of mildly spirited driving to get the engine fully warmed up and the exhaust system nice and toasty.

I am of the old school too and find myself staring at my black pipe from time to time trying to decide whether or not to go 'round front and lean things out, but JDW is right, Unless you have a converter on a car these days you are going to end up with what appears to be an over-rich mix just about every time.

Where is "the Man" fishing?

Agree. Also effects the coloring on the plugs. I get the same black soot in the Harley pipe and it has the lean mileage kit in the Mikuni. So Hubby doesn't need to fix it. Hopefully he'll have bigger fish to fry. :)
