How high would one want to suspend their car for ease of getting underneath for cleaning? I have it up on ramps and the rear on stands which seems good enough but I would like to have it higher. Any idea what would be a "safe"?

I doubt it...LOL I've tried that route.. :)
Quick lifts may be your best solution.

Cool Rick.. I'll be right over....LOL
It is obvious that you have come to a real cross roads in your life Sam! There will be no better time or excuse to build a nice twin bay garage out behind the house that has enough clearance for at least one service lift and a drain in the floor. The first thing you will have to buy for it is of course a high pressure washer. A wet suit will be proper attire for this and similar events. Please post photos of you in the wet suit. Flipper fins are optional.
Let's see, if you wash down the underside twice a year and stay in shape long enough to do that for ten more years it won't amount to much more than say, a grand a wash job. If you figure it that way though and feel like it is worth it, the rest of the time sitting out there drinking beer and cussing the car will be freebie!
