I would like to change my spedo face, how do you get the needle (indicator?) off without damaging it?

Carefully!

But first, you need to mark where the driven plate sits when the needle is at the pin (or any other convenient position). You will need to reproduce this orientation when you replace the needle or your calibration will be off by a fixed angle.

To get the needle off, you need to pull it *directly* forward (i.e., parallel to the pin). Possibly take two small screwdrivers, set small spacers on either side of the speedo needle and pry upwards on both sides. It will suddenly pop off.

When you replace it, you must put it on in exactly the same orientation wrt to the driven plate as it was originally.

I use some round tooth picks as the fulcrum points - when the needle pops off, it will probably ricochet off the ceiling - it helps to have a second person to act as a spotter when it does so.

I'll go with the above method, but don't have your face directly over it when you are working. It can hurt.

Don't ask me how I know this.

When everything is set to pop off the needle, have someone lay a paper towel over it and the needle won't fly away and possibly get damaged. JMHO. PJ

Thanks for all of that. A slight twist and off it came, no worries. I now have a '76 spedo case with the correct pre 74 speedo for my overdrive unit.

I'm late to the dance on this one, but I use a fork (as in knife and fork). Put some masking tape on the gauge face to protect it.

I pulled with my fingers (straight). When it started to move I stopped and "eased" the indicator over the zero stop so I'd know where to replace it and pulled it the rest of the way off.

Now i have had my giggle at you ......

You will have to get a GPS and drive the car to a set speed, say 50 MPH, then note what your speedo is reading, then remove the guts and MARK the drum where it is NOW, remove the needle and move it around the same number of degrees as it is at 50 MPH and where your needle read.
