So I have this Black Label overdrive that Steve Opitz (Steve64) gave me a couple of years ago. Apparently it had bee in his father's backyard for years......Well the only way I am going to consider driving to Canada for MG2010 is if I have a working overdrive. Peter Mittler tells me I need a Blue Label OD for my '80. I spent a couple of hours last night cleaning up the outside before I was going to hit the manual and consider rebuilding.....Anyone want to consider trading?

Any idea if it is a working unit. I have one that is still in the 78 MGB I'm parting out that I would swap for an early non synchro working O.D.
It will work in your car... Only problem is to address the speedo issue which can be done with a ratio adapter for about $100...

Advice from Peter Middler:
The Black label will FIT BUT
1/ There is no hole in your 1980 tunnel to access the dip stick and filler hole. The 1980 Blue Label is a SIDE FILL unit, not a top fill.
2/ The gear ratio on the speedo drive is wrong and will run at 1280 TPI - you need 1000 TPI.
Trade it for a Blue Label
I could be wrong and if I am, please let me know. But I thought that the major difference between the 2 ODs as far as speedos go is just the drive gear where the cable attaches. One is red and the other is white. I can't remember which one goes in wich OD. But there is a tooth difference. If you change this drive, you change the speedo ratio without needing to change the entire OD.

you are mostly correct...........the blue lable O/D has a 1000tpm speedo gear setup, the black lable has a 1280tpm gear setup. Both the driven and the drive gear need to be changed....not just one. That becomes expensive and requires some disassembly of the O/D. The speedo change problem gets more complicated because, unlike every other year range, the '77-'80 speedos do not have a corresponding matching 1280 variant.
I did a '78 once and used early 70s English gauges (the 1280 speedo and matching tach). These look great in the late dash and of course are the same size as the original gauges. Change the other small gauge rings to chrome (or the large English ones to painted) so they all match and then you are all done.

Are you suggesting I consider this approach? I have a 1020 and 1040 speedo guage as well as two MKI tachs.....Those guages would look strange with the other guages and then there is that issue with drilling a hole in the tunnel.....
I have no idea whether this overdrive even works at this point....

most important...........see what the trans (and o/d unit are like)..if you are having someone take it all apart, put the guts back in your late side fill case if the dipstick bothers you. I'm not convinced you don't have a plug....go look.
Then you can switch speedo gears or speedos......I happen to like the early style in the late dash. Your early MGB gauges won't work (wrong tpm).
I think you have a plug access... I know I do in my 77.. Which is a side fill...
At one time I had a ratio adapter to run a 1280 trans with a 1000TPM speedo.. Worked fine... Just sold it last year...
Well I just checked and under the carpet behind the console on the passenger side is a rubber seal so I guess I do have access afterall....
OK guys...I am going in. Wish me luck. Lloyd is helping and I am taking lots of pics....Will either restore this bad boy or be back someday selling components. :smoking:
Way to go. Yes, I there's an access hole in the tunnel behind the radio in later cars, it just wasn't used. They didn't change the body molds for just that hole, jeez!
I'd trade ya - but I'm keeping my working Blue Label OD. Gonna be pulling it soon - and swapping it into my 79!
