The lock portion of the ignition switch is failing and not allowing the key to turn. It's one of the later Lucas replacements installed about 20 years ago. I would like to go back to the original style switch which is flush with the cowl instead of the current protruding replacements. I know the wiring is different between the years however did the 2 piece switch/lock assembly change as well or will any of them work if the correct ignition switch is swapped in?

Not sure about a '75, but I know the guts will interchange - I did this just last August.
Stewart, the ing. switch from 73 to 80 were the same & yes the 73 lock assem will work in the newer cars. I have some of the early lock assem. that will work with your switch.
I'm facing a related issue on my 74.5 BGT - a previous owner pulled the whole ignition switch/steering column lock out of the column, and mounted an old fashioned ignition switch in a little homemade bracket hanging under the dash. It works, but at some point I'd like to put the correct-style unit back in on the column.
If I understand Glenn's comment (above), the "mechanical" portion of the switches for years 1973 to 1980 is the same, and the only difference year to year is the electrical switch on the end opposite where the key is inserted (e.g. different number of wires, bullet connectors vs a single multi-plug, etc.) Is this correct?
Thanks!
Paul
