I replaced the steering lock and ignition switch in Kathys LE back in November and it has been working pretty good ever since...although the key is a bit stubborn to get out. Today Kathy couldnt get the car started....the engine wouldnt even turn over! It looks like we need to replace the whole assembly again. My question is....can I replace only the cylinder and key without having to replace the entire steering lock assembly? From what I can tell, I can replace the switch and harness (the electrical portion only) without any problem, but I dont think this is the root problem, but I might replace it just for giggles. And, where can I get the cylinsdeer and key assembly. I can find it in any of the major catalogs. Thanks for the help guys and gals. Jim

pull the electrical portion out and turn the switch with the tip of a screwdriver.....car start now? it sounds to me like you have a miss alignment between the two (switch and lock).

I've heard that the replacement switches are NFG. It is for sure you don't have to replace the whole assembly. I got tired of the nonsense of the key, bum switches and steering wheel lock, so I removed the assembly entirely. It took me just a few minutes with a small punch to start the bolts loosening.

I have replaced the ignition switch with a $10 part from an autosupply outfit, and I chose to add a starter pushbutton, and mounted both on the dash. Looks rather neat and is reminiscent of the MGA. I doubt this will be easy for the car thief to scope out in the few seconds they usually use.
