Hi there.

I have been battling a fuel smell for a while. Initially I suspected the tank and fittings. I could smell strong odors when I lifted the rear boot (GT) cover. I removed the tank. There was some mild pitting, but no obvious holes. I cleaned it and applied a healthy coat of glass resin over the entire top surface. I reinstalled the tank... and things seemed to be much better. My partner (she has a keen sense of smell, and is very susceptible to nausea) could ride comfortably in the car.

Now occasionally the "smell comes back" but it is not quite as bad, the smell in the boot area is negligible. I'm beginning to wonder if this isn't another problem, perhaps a carb issue. I have a weber 32/36 conversion. Would a sticking float perhaps cause this, if so what woudl be another indicator? Any other thoughts are appreciated.

Cheers

Matt

check the lines to the vapor recovery tank on the RH rear inside the car, there usually stainless braided lines and are often if not always rotted

Oh sorry forgot to mention that this car does not have a vapour recovery system...

It is a '69 with the Weber conversion. I assume that in good trim this smell would not be present, but perhaps this is a flaw of the system?

Check your filler hose and clamps also

So - what happened to the holes in the tank that the vapour recovery system is supposed to connect to?

Ron, Filler hose clamps are good, at least I've made sure they are tight. PS. I lived in Invermere for a winter, taught at Panorama.

Terry, there does not appear to be any sort of vapour recovery, I believe that some early cars did not have one. Can this be correct?

Cheers

Vapor recovery started in 1970.

weber carbs are sensative to fuel pressure as are SUs .if you have a non-standard
fuel pump installed it can cause over filling float bowl .

A float that has a bit of gas inside it will sometimes overflow the carb while the car seems to run normal.
