Yes, another brakes question. At least I'm moving on to the front now.

I was replacing the bleeder in the front left caliper with a speedbleeder. It appears the original bleeder was cross threaded in the hole and the hole threads are completely messed up. Even the original bleeder will not tighten back down.

Is this something I can fix with a helicoil or should I bite the bullet and buy a rebuilt caliper? If I replace the left caliper, should I also do the right?

Buy a new caliper. I would not trust a Heilicoil in that application. It may work fine but one day it may develope a leak around the threads and cause a fluid loss. Just replace it and be done'

Now that said, someone with a good ability could drill the old hole out and thread it foe a larger bleeder, but then you have two different size bleaders on the front to deal with

That was my gut feeling as well - replace the unit.

Now, if I go for an aftermarket rebuilt caliper on the left, is there any need to replace the one on the right? Is there a possibility of the brake system becoming unbalanced with potentially different calipers on each side? My local "Advance Auto" has a number of units available and I'd like to buy local to get back on the road sooner.

buy in pairs and let them have the old ones for cores.

Sounds good Jerry. Thanks!

I'd replace in pairs as well, but there is no reason why you cannot get by with just one as long as the other one is in good shape, if you are so inclined. I would also replace the hose/hoses as well. I replace hoses every time I replace or rebuild a caliper. Old hoses can cause you many headaches when the start coming apart inside and restricting return flow of brake fluid to the M/C. That could cost you a caliper and rotor if the pad stays out and overheats the rotor

I agree with my fellow 71 GT owner.<G>

But I'm envious in that his seems a driver, and mines not. (but the roadster is dyn-o-mite!)

Mac, mine has not been a driver since June 2001
