After breaking down an LH-type overdrive purchased this weekend, I found that what appears to be a sort of clutch ring around the sliding member (item #4, pictured) is loose and was previously held with some kind of glue or adhesive. This ring also has holes that line up with holes on the sliding member, as though it could be riveted in place. Could anyone shed any light on whether this is meant to be riveted or glued to the sliding member, and if it is indeed meant to be glued, what type of adhesive to use?

You'll need a new clutch see this article on Quantumechanics.com

scroll to the bottom of the page and they discuss what you have already found.

Friction materials such as brake linings or clutch discs are bonded to the steel plate using a special adhesives that are heat cured. As mentioned above a new clutch is in order. Quantum sells ones that are riveted and bonded.

Thank you both. The lining appears to be in fairly good shape, it's just separated from the steel due to age/disuse. If the relined sliding members are riveted, I'll try riveting the one I have.

If you read the info they are riveted AND bonded. Plus they are working with new material not 30+ yo stuff soaked in oil. You do as you wish but I certainly wouldn't take a chance of ruining an otherwise good OD for the sake of a couple hundred bucks. If your rivet job comes undone, there's gonna be a lot of debris running loose. Good luck.

TJ, there should be 2 linings on that clutch...1 on the outside and 1 on the inside. If they both arent there....get a new clutch. Oh hell...get a new one anyway.

I highly doubt they are going to be off the shelf rivets that fit a standard hand riveter either.

That's good info to know, I knew that the clutches needed to be replaced on occasion. But I did not know that the clutch material disinegrated to that state, I think I might start changing the oil in the gearbox more often.

Alex, that's correct. I've been told the rivets for this application would be a 1/8 dia X 3/8 long, copper rivet, flat head. I may follow up with Quantum to see what adhesive they use/recommend as well. If the finished product is too ugly, there's always the new unit as many have suggested.
