On Sunday I changed the brake pads on our MINI. I noticed that the right rear caliper piston was sticking.

I called the dealer and he asked me to call the MINI roadside assistance. Within 15 minutes a flat deck car hauler arrived, loaded the MINI up and took it to the dealer. The dealer is in Victoria. A distance of about 110 KM.

The dealer called the next day to let me know that the car was ready and there was no charge. They also mentioned that the method that I had used to change the pads was up to the MINI factory standard. A complement of doing excellent work from the dealer’s service department is a bit of an ego booster. My head will not fit thru the door for a few days. :D

If MINI Canada runs true to form their Canadian head office will call in a few days to see if I was still happy with our 4 year old MINI and the dealer's service.

After owning many new cars I am still amazed at the level of concern that MINI has for their customers.
MINI Canada calls to check up on their dealer every time any service is done.

Service like that is amazing isn't it? We test drove a MINI a few months ago, the dealer just handed us the keys, said "you have a full tank of gas, just be back before we close", this was at 10 A.M.

I must say that VW isn't far behind, at least in my experience. They call after any dealer experience or roadside service assistance, but I can't say they would to check my work, that's pretty extreme!

Chrysler calls us every time we go in for free oil changes on our Charger too. Any service is followed up with a short survey of the experience. All of our experiences there have been exceptional, excluding an incident with the sales staff, but that's another story.

When I had my Focus, Ford would call me after every service too - untill I blasted the dealer for missing a safety item (bent wheel rim), and poor workmanship (trim fell off in the "service lane" AFTER they had performed a recall!). After that, Ford didn't call anymore! So I bought a Hyundai!

Service at Mercedes is exceptional too, the heater on ours malfunctioned and the battery was flay yesterday morning, after jump starting it we drove straight to the dealers with no appointment, they took it in and repaired it within an hour. They will call to check that we were happy and if we weren't they will do their best to fix the problem.

We bought a car at a Kia dealership a couple of weeks ago, they have followed up with letters and phone calls checking we are happy. They have also given us free oil changes on any vehicle we own for as long as we own the car we bought from them. :)

Is it the US manufacture's head office calling on the Chrysler, Ford, Mercedes or VW? Or is it the local dealer?

If it is the manufacture, things have sure changed since I bought the new car that we owned before the MINI.

I had a paint problem on a GM product and called the dealer. He said that orange peel was perfectly acceptable. I called GM and they said that my satisfaction was their goal. After a few weeks I called back and was given the same story. I decided to live with the poor paint job.
When we went looking to buy a new car this time I looked carefully at the paint jobs and most have orange peel to some extent.
A $70,000 Cadillac Esplanade was in the mall on display. The orange peel was very obvious under those bright lights. Every refection in that SUV was distorted.
Ford and Chrysler had much better paint, but still not up to show car standards.. The best paint was on the European and Japanese vehicles.

I think at concourse events in the future orange peel will be on the check list.

Dodge dealer:

I went in and test drove a 4x4 Dakota.

2 weeks later salesman calls "Mr. Wiz, I'm just following up on your test drive of a 2 wheel drive Ram.

Oh, don't get me started on car salesmen!

So, what is the difference between a used car salesman, and a computer salesman?

The computer salesman knows when he is lying!

My MG dealer/service department always calls and asks me about my satisfaction after work is completed...or...perhaps that is just the voices in my head checking to see if I know what I am doing when I perform my own service...hmmmmmmmmmm

Tony (hey...who said that)
