Yeah, and I went to a local Ford dealer about 10 years ago when they advertised a Ranger pickup for $10k. When I got there, the sales guy said - "Oh, there aren't any that cheap, you musta mis-read the ad." So I produced the ad and he says "oh, there was supposed to be an asterick with a footnote showing that's after a down payment and before taxes." Net result was that the real price was going to be about $13k - I gave him a piece of my mind and left without even looking at what he had to offer, went to another dealer who had a nice hardly-used 2-year-old well-equipped one for $7k.

Did mine online with H & R Block - total cost was $0. Filed Federal online, printed and mailed State and requested rerturn via check.

Just curious here-did you actually expect to get something for nothing? Why would H&R be giving away their service and materials to hundreds or maybe thousands of folks without some way in their plan to at least cover their expenses? If someone ever offers you something free, you best be looking for the strings attached. I was taught to never expect anything free out of life but a hard time and it was worked out to be true

Unless I am missing something here.. You used H&R Block in the past... Were "Ripped Off" ... But went back once again for another shot and feel you got "Ripped Off" once again?
Sounds like me at the slots at Georgian Downs every couple weeks. 8-)

You can file for free through links at irs.gov - use their freeFile program.

Your Adjusted Gross Income must be either $52k or 57k, depending on the company you choose.

H&R Block and TurboTax are two of the companies offering this product.

You'll get your refund in less than ten days if you efile and direct deposit.

I think what has Dan upset, is the classic "bait and switch" sales tactic. And I can't say as I blame him on that score . . . although it also not reasonable to expect a professional service, of any kind, free of charge . . . H & R Block should have stated their pricing policies more clearly.

I'm still a bit chapped over America's Best Eyeglasses advertisement claiming 2 pair of glasses for $69 . . . My costs actually ended up over $350 . . . Typical misleading sales hype to get your butt in the door. Then discover that any of the product that's actually useful, will have several added charges.

Learn from it . . . "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me."

You want good inexspensive glasses......

zennioptical.com

lots of people in OZ are importing prescription spectacles for less than $50 a pair, not heard of any problems yet. Pair for the pocket, desk, car, garage.......I'm never without my specs now.

Looks pretty plain to me-http://www.hrblock.com/offices/tax-services-free-1040ez.html
They say up front 1040EZ is free unless you have certain kinds of income.

Cons rely on the victim being greedy and expecting something for nothing.

I was taught at an early age that I should not expect anything for free, and have passed the lesson on to my daughter. If you do not understand where the other person is profiting, then you should not be dealing with them.

I used to run a retail operation, and it is unbelivable how many people came in during a promotion figuring they had the special interpretion of the advert that entitled them to something for free. The righteous indignation that ensued was alsmost funny.

It says the 1040EZ is free. Does NOT include the State Tax filing.

1 Type of federal return filed is based on taxpayer's personal situation and IRS rules/regulations. Form 1040EZ is generally used by single/married taxpayers with taxable income under $100,000, no dependents, no itemized deductions, and certain types of income (including wages, salaries, tips, taxable scholarships or fellowship grants, and unemployment compensation). Fees apply with Earned Income Credit and for state returns. Taxpayer must meet IRS criteria to use Form 1040EZ. Available at participating U.S. locations. Offer expires February 29, 2012. ©2011 HRB Tax Group, Inc.

The original post said you had Earned Income Credit, and the note clearly says there are fees associated if you have Earned Income Credit.

I have a friend that is a CPA and he does my taxes every year and has done
so for more years than either of us want to remmber. Never had a problem and
yes he does charge for his services. I don't know what he charges other people
but I am satisfied with what I pay him. And that cost is between the two of us,
and coveres both the federal and NY state returns.

On a similar situation I did an full color architectural rendering for a client
many years ago of a large nursing home that he was proposing. He was a steady
customer and the previous drawings were rather simple that I did for him and
only in pen and ink. This was a LARGE drawing in full clor and on a 24" x 36" board.
I gave him the bill and he hit the ceiling. We argued about the cost and all he
kept reminding me of was the cost of the small pen and inks. Finally he reached
in his jacket and pulled out his check book. The check he handed to me was for
half of my price. We argued a little longer and then I had enough. I took the
drawing and snapped it in half over my knee and gave him half of it. I said you
pay for half that's all you get. He stormed away without taking the drawing but
with his check in hand. Needless to say I never did anymore work for him but it
did teach me one important rule. I never started another drawing after that
without establishing the price first.

That all said, there are places that will file your taxes for no charge. I know this because my father volunteers each tax season. The charity is intended for seniors who may have lost the tax accounting spouse or suffered a deterioration of health that makes it hard to perform the task.
