Wouldn't the rest of the #s simply be the car's actual production number?

The factory may have called them the production #, but to Motor Vehicle Dep't. its the serial #

The 5, after GAN means it's a MKIII. GAN 5 was used for several years
The U is only for North American models
The G at the end indicates it was built in the Abingdon factory, cars built at the Cowly factory ended in M

I just looked closer at the plates on my car and my car was made in december of 1973 (12/73).

In the door jam i found put the body number which is

G
U
N
4
5
4
0
2
0
R - OR IT COULD BE A "B" I WAS HARD TO TELL.

My Engine number has been broken off all that is left is

1
2
V

Which i know means that the engine runs 12 volts

Is there any other way i can find out my engine number other than that plate?

My CHASIS number plate is also MIA is there another place i could find this?

I belive the 12V is for the engine being a 1275. Next it would had been about your trans, then hi or low compression and engine #.

MIchael, if you are obsessing about these numbers--which are nice to know, but actually not essential for ordering parts, you can order a British Motor Heritage Certificate and it will list the engine number and chassis number that match your car, tell you what day it was made, where it was shipped, etc. Mine cost about $70US.

However, MY certificate was a huge disappointment. What it showed was that a plate with a VIN number from a car totally unrelated to mine was installed at some point, probably for reasons I don't want to know. BMH found another VIN number for my car, based on my body and chassis numbers. Cool, but do you think I'm going to spend time trying to explain to DVM why the serial number on my title should be changed to match this new VIN plate I just stamped out in my basement? Nope.

So I spent $70 finding out something I already know, which is too much information is not necessarily a good thing.

I think i will get one of those certificates so i can replace the plates and it would be nice to have the proof and history of my car.

thanks Charles,
Mike.

The 12V engine was an emission control engine if I remember right. They started using that designation after 1972.

My '72, built in 10/71 has a 12V motor, and it had a smog pump. It is not a California car
