Hi folks.
Just finished running the Apple Security Update on my ibook running 10.3.9.
After the required reboot, there was no wireless connectivity. Rebooted again, and got the "dark screen" of kernel panic: "you need to restart".
Did another restart, and system hangs at the opening apple boot screen. Forcing restart brings up the kernel panic restart needed again.
This is discussed at:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4477345#4477345
Wondered if anyone here has successfully recovered from this. If I can figure out how to delete the file "appleairport2.kext" I could probably get going again. But I can't find a boot disk other than Install, and Install only allows OS installation and Disk Utility (but no way to search for the file I want to delete).
Thanks.
Tom

Can you boot to linux and access the disk? Not a mac guy, but isnt 10x linux?
Do you have it working yet? And what Mac are you running?
I have a Power Chip iMac. It updated fine, and is running a bit faster since I installed it. I am running a hard line for my Mac connection, although I do also run wireless in the house. One desktop PC, an iMac, and two laptops.
This year's Macs run Intel now.
And I am pretty sure the Mac OS isn't Linux based.
What an ugly discussion. With issues like that I'd just as soon do Windows. But I haven't had those issues and need the Mac for multi-media. Final Cut and Adobe CS2. Only someone glutton for punishment seeks out Windows based in that arena.
Hope you have this sorted Tom, I administer a Mac/PC network and haven't had this problem, hopefully I won't!
Alonzo, I have the entire Creative Suite loaded on both Macs and PCs, as long as the systems are built for the applications you intend to run on them there is no problem, now I'm just waiting for my CS3 disks to arrive so I can see how that runs on the same systems. :)
Finally found the solution. This (see original post) seems to happen only on 10.3.9 security update (2007-004). What a mess.
Anyway - here's what I did to fix it:
Continued to try Reboot until it finally rebooted past Kernel Panic overlay.
Launch Terminal
Type: sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions <return>
Enter your admin password if prompted
Quit the Terminal program
Restart
There are 100s of posts on the apple 10.3.x forum about this. Many varied symptoms, but mostly dealing with bogus Airport connectivity, and/or Kernel Panic when prompted to reboot.
Hope this helps someone.

One of my co-workers has been whacked, and it really appears he now has a hardware problem as a result. BIG bummer.
I don't have this particular update, buy with mine, I now have to log into this site everyday. Bummer.....
I have been updating my Macs (work G5 and Powerbook and home Mac Mini) for a long time now so I gather I went through 10.3.9 and I never noticed any problems.
I am now running 10.4.9 (recently updated).
Eric - that security update (2007-004) wasn't available until last month (April). So if you left 10.3.x and moved to 10.4 before April you never saw the update.
My poor ol' ibook 500 dual USB wouldn't benefit from Tiger, so I'm still plugging along with Panther. Panther does what I want, and the gui is friendly. So much so, that I added an Aqua skin, dock and object bar to my XP box.

I use both Winboxes and macs. There are annoyances with each, though I usually get ballistic sooner with mac issues (because they usually start with delete preferences and end with reinstallation in 2 steps). I'm doing this on a 1.25 emac with 2GB ram--yep! the USB 2.0 1.25/1.4 emacs can take 2GB undocumented. but it's gotta be clean PC2700/pc3200 ram; next step overclocking the chip and replacing the drives. (If you have an emac, look at the appropriate links on the aple site mentioned below).
512 is not good for 10.4.8 Nor for XP<G>). I use a mac mini at work, 10.4.9, also 2GB. Can't justify a Macpro or iMac. Works fine for output. I do file work on an old 3G P4 that's faster.
I Heard about the 10.3.9 issues and with some trepidation OK'd the upgrade on the emac, No problem. Coasted right thru it, 10.4 was soon after.
Have you looked at http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa
?
very active forum groups there. lots of good info not-Apple-filtered.

Only pre-OSX.
Besides, re-installing the OS is a simple and non-destructive exercise unlike on Windows boxes.
Our company started off running all Macs or Unix boxes of other flavours. As we grew from seven staff to now just under 300 we got overwhelmed with Windows boxes on most desktops.
Since OSX most management and higher level geeks have changed over to Macs. The "desktop support" people resisted the change for a while, but now (despite them having to support all the Windows boxes - while the Mac uses just supported themselves) even they have changed to Macs for work and home use.
The boss (owner of this company that has become a multi-million dollar enterprise) is an avid Mac user, always has been, sees a time when again we become totally Macintosh. He envisages the support budget almost disappearing if that happens.
OSX is horribly stable.
Darned security programs are causing more problems than they're fixing! My Windows-based computer hasn't been the same since I installed Norton's full-blown crap on it.
Security systems seem to be HUGE system hogs. I got rid of Norton's on my XP PC and replaced it with Grisofts AVG antivirus and Spyware Doctor for malware and spyware. I use XP's firewall, and so far, they have worked reasonably well together and my PC runs better than with Norton's. However, it seems that Norton has a new version out, hopefully it is less intrusive to system operation and performance than the older versions have been.

I just renewed my Norton with the upgrade. Hardly any noticeable difference.
Tom not a Mac but The latest version of Mc Afees Secuirty Suite will not acknowledge a PC that:
1) Does not have a copy of McAffee on it.
2) Has an older version of McAffe.
3) Is not running Windoze.
Image the fuin that has been causing us at work - until we stumbled (yes McAfee could give us an answer) across the reason.
