I knew that name would get you guy's attention---right! Did you know that she has now surpassed Elvis in No. 1 singles and is now second to only the Beatles?

Would you believe I don't know one song that Mariah Carey sings -- honest!

Your turn :)

Naomi,

I saw that too, and was pretty impressed by her humble response. "I can never put myself in the category of people who have not only revolutionized music but also changed the world."
BTW, I don't know any of her songs either.

I've seen and heard the name but don't know what she looks like or anything she's done.

Here she is. The girl can sing for sure!

She really is quite a good singer. She has a 4 octave range. I associate her mostly with top 40 dance music which seems to be a waste of such a good voice. I don't care for her style of music but apparently a lot of people do. A good deal of her popularity may be due to her really good PR people who get her photo in the NY Daily News (and I'm sure many other newspapers and magazines) almost every day.

Great voice, great range, just no memorable songs. Can't think of a one.

I got to work with her and sell her records during the '90's when I did sales for Sony Music and she was on Columbia records. I always looked forward to a Mariah Carey record. I knew I would make my quota for a few months running! Then again, the stakes were always high as she was the boss's wife! lol

She does have an amazing voice and can write. But her knack was to pick up trends in the NY dance clubs and take them to top 40. Plus, she always was able to hook up with the right producers/writers at the right time. (Walter Afanasieff, Sean Combs, Jermaine Dupris, Will I Am, Diane Warrne) I remember being at a record release party for Emotions (I think) and she introduced her new friend/producer "Puffy". I remember thinking, that's an odd name!

Her husband is a major record executive, and she always gets tremendous promotion and air play for her records. She may have talent, but connections seem to be more important in her case.

I also could not name one of her songs.

Actually it was her EX-husband Tommy Mottola who hooked up with her and directed the start of her career and then she broke off to try what she wanted to do (as my understanding, John, being a close personal friend of hers would know more :) ).

FWIW, I liked her early stuff when she was under the direction of her then husband but then, Maine is not a hotbed of the hip hop world.

I still remember when debuted on SNL. Her voice (range)blew me away. Ok, she looked(s) ok I guess :D

Her style of music makes me want to commit hari kari. As far as her range goes at the uppermost region I believe only dogs can hear her.

I refer to that style of music as "squeeze your testicles" music.

Removes testosterone to below detectable levels.

Yuck.

That's what happens when you buy your songs instead of write them.

Not necessarily. Neither Frank Sinatra nor Elvis Presley were songwriters and I bet you can remember a bunch of the songs they bought.
