Heading out to Mayberry, NC early tomorrow morning in one of the MGBs to catch the parade and enjoy the events at Mayberry Days. Some of the folks from the Andy Griffith Show that will be there this year in the tiny town are:

Betty Lynn - Thelma Lou
Doug & Rodney Dillard - The Darling Boys
Elizabeth MacRae - LouAnn Poovie
James Best - Jim Lindsey
Jackie Joseph - "Sweet Romena"
George Spence - Frank the Fiance
Maggie Peterson - Charlene Darling
LeRoy McNees - Mayberry on Record
David Morris - Howard "Ernest T" Morris' son

Of course most of the cast members have passed on. I am a firm believer that it was the best show ever on TV and my family still loves the reruns.

My favorite character was Barney if I had to pick one but Otis was sure loveable.

Four questions:

What was your favorite episode?

Who was your favorite character?

Are you going to be there?

And there is a song I think the lyrics are "If I can't make it to Heaven I hope I go to Mayberry" --ever heard of it and who sings it?

Your turn :)

PS: I'll try to get a picture of the hubby dancing with Charlene or playing guitar with Jim Lindsey ;)

I think the town is actually called Mount Airy, NC, although the town clearly enjoys its fictional name!

I go with Barney also.

Richard you are right but there is a little section of Surry County in Mount Airy dear to our hearts that is called Mayberry. Anyone who visits will recognize the Bluebird Diner, Snappy Lunch, Aunt Bea's Resturant, and Floyds Barber shop all in operation.

Nearby towns and landmarks bear familiar names: Pilot Mountain (Mount Pilot), Siler City ( where Aunt Bea retired and died ) Fancy Gap, Bannertown.

Matter of fact after the parade in the morning we'll be eating lunch at the Bluebird Cafe. Since you are so close why don't you come up and I'll buy you dinner :)

Ah....you're singing my song there NA!!

Are you familiar with Rascal Flatts song "Mayberry"? Here are the lyrics:

Sometimes it feels like this world
Is spinning faster
Than it did in the old days
So naturally, we have more
Natural disasters
From the strain of a fast pace
Sunday was a day of rest
Now it's one more day for progress
And we can't slow down 'cause
More is best
It's all an endless process

(Well) I miss Mayberry
Sitting on the porch drinking
Ice cold Cherry Coke
Where everything is black and white
Picking on a six string
Where people pass by and you call
Them by their first name
Watching the clouds roll by
Bye, bye

Sometimes I can hear this old
Earth shouting
Through the trees as the wind blows
That's when I climb up here on
This mountain
To look through God's window
Now I can't fly but I got two feet
That get me high up here
Above the noise and city streets
My worries disappear

(Well) I miss Mayberry
Sitting on the porch drinking
Ice cold Cherry Coke
Where everything is black and white
Picking on a six string
Where people pass by and you call
Them by their first name
Watching the clouds roll by
Bye, bye

Sometimes I dream I'm driving
Down an old dirt road
Not even listed on a map
I pass a dad and son carrying a
Fishing pole
But I always wake up every time I try
To turn back

(Well) I miss Mayberry
Sitting on the porch drinking
Ice cold Cherry Coke
Where everything is black and white
Picking on a six string
Where people pass by and you call
Them by their first name
Watching the clouds roll by
Bye, bye

Bye, bye
(I miss Mayberry, I miss Mayberry)

Naomi:

Thanks for this information. Maybe next year it will be on my list of places and events to be at.

Funny, I just watched 'A Beautiful Mind' last night, directed by Opie himself.

He certainly has some nice accomplishments, after moving on from being a 'child star'

Much of what was Mayberry was reflected in my own NC experience growing up there.

My favorite character was probably Andy Griffith, and then Barney.

What I always appreciated was Andy's willingness to see the other side, and to avoid, if at all possible, putting people at risk.

Folks like the Dillards had their success as musicians, and others went on to further their careers as character actors, etc.

Andy was a good ol' boy in the best sense of what I came to know living in the South, and he gave a dignity to that way of life when most of the rest of the country was either ignorant of it, or so full of wrongheaded stereotypes, that they dismissed it as backwards and still fighting the Civil War. It was more and better than that, and that is why my sister chose to live out her last years there, and why I still have a soft spot for that way of life and the people there.

It's hard to pick a favorite character. I'd have to stick with Andy if forced.

Best episode for me was the one where the Darlin's (Dillard's) came to town and took up playing in the hotel.

I have always wondered why - in the U.S. - the 'south' begins at Virginia or North Carolina or so, when geographically, they are more in the middle of north-south.

Is it because north-south was determined by the Civil War boundaries, and that has set the distinction?

Just curious. I've been to the area, and love it, but it doesn't seem that 'south' to me.

By the way, when was the war of 1812?

My favorite character is Barney, as well. Favorite episode is the one where Andy and Helen get caught in a cave-in and Barney rescues them. Gomer's "Citizens Arrest" is a close second.

Wow, deja vu, we were just talking about Aunt Bea soloing an airplane in one of the shows. (AOPA Forums ) (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Assoc). Tha discussion went on for 8 pages.

Wow, deja vu all over again. We had 8 pages of discussion on Mayberry on the AOPA Website. ( Airplane Owners and Pilots Assoc). The discussion started with the time Aunt Bee took flying lessons and soloed. Mt Pilot was actually Pilot Mountain (pic below)

Historically the South was defined by the Mason Dixon line which was the border between Maryland and Pennsylvania.

If it had to be redrawn today it would probably be somewhere just north of Richmond. lol
