Can anyone elaborate on how the Smiths Tachometer and Speedometer bezels are sealed?

- On the inside of the chrome bezel, there seems to be some kind of rubber sealant as well as an O-ring type of seal on top of the sealant. On my instruments, the rubber sealant is dried and cracked. What do you use to replace this old rubber sealant?
- It looks like the Moss and VB catalogs also show a rubber seal on the outside of the bezel, between the bezel and the metal dash. I don't seem to have these seals. Are they standard?

Those are just big o-rings between the gauge and the dash. Moss has 'em. They are standard, and don't last forever.
I don't wory about sealing between the glass and the case, though. I couldn't figure out what is is either!

On the inside of the bezel, I removed the hard black material and replaced it with a thin strip of closed cell foam from a hobby store.
Between the glass and the body of the gauge, I did not use anything, the foam from above appeared to hold the glass tightly to the metal with no rattle. Some of my gauges had a thin O-ring there.

Between the bezel and the dash, I got a set off of evil bay. I then found O-rings at the local Ace Hardware that would have done the job for about 1/2 the price

That hard stuff is called Dum-Dum and it was the sealant they used. You can remove it with a heat gun, it will get soft and you can scrape it off easier than if it is hard. I think you should seal between the glass and the guage body so no moisture gets in there too.

Barrie has some good O-rings. Last I knew his were the correct ones and the others were just 'close enough'

O-RINGS TO REPAIR SMITH AND JAEGER GAUGES:
I can supply nearly all the o-rings required to refurbish Smith and Jaeger gauges including the inner ones. These are the ones that go between the glass and the bezel and do not appear in any catalog of which I know. Most 'old' gauges work fine except the o-rings get brittle and crack.
