My Miata seats have a cavity in the head restraint. I guess this is for speakers. What size would be appropriate and how mounted. I have not looked real close, only stuck my hand thru the gap after unzipping one part way.

The Fiero uses 3-1/2 inch speakers. I would imagine that the Miata uses similar.
I order mine from Crutchfield.

Fiero speakers "float" in the foam of the headrest.
The wiring runs down the inside of the back and out one side.
Doesn't the foam seriously damp out the sound?
Or is the fabric of the seat act, in effect, as the fabric might in a speaker box?
Does one rig the RH seat as the RH speaker and LH seat as the LH?
Each seat has a RH and LH speaker. Otherwise you'd only be hearing one channel on your side of the car!

best option. My understanding is that all miata seats (of the appropriate years) had teh provision for speakers (wire channels and mounting holes) but only certain option packages had them installed.
Hi,
Mine also came with speakers fitted, and yes both channels go to both speakers in each seat.
What I did with mine was to wire the driver's side as the front speakers and the passenger's as the rear. This allows for different tastes in volume.

The Miata speakers are small rectangular speakers.
The following web pages show the retrofit of Miata seats, including the installation of the speakers. Each web site has several pages and some sections might not apply (please overlook the cars involved ! ):

Chris, thanks for posting that link. I may upgrade my Miata seats. I currently have a 3.5" speaker in each seat. Not the finest sound but it works. No bass with these small speakers.
Running the wires in covered seats could pose a real challenge. Fortunately, when I had mine redone, my upholsterer ran wires for two speakers in each head restraint. She told me it would be nearly impossible to run the wires after they're done. Just something to think about.
I tried to source OEM Mazda speakers from the local dealer but I was told the speakers weren't a common option in Canada. They suggested trying in the US. Didn't bother as I found the 3.5's.
that link to the 3rd millenium site is great! Looks like that is the route I'll take when I get a round toit Next summer, probably).
glad that link helped. I've saved it for a while, i have an extra set of midget headrests that are just begging to be experimented on.
Which makes me wonder if standard MGB headrests could be altered to take speakers inside them. I guess you'd have to remove the headrest covers. Do they zip off? Probably not. Then you'd have to hollow out cavities for the speakers, install them, run wires down the center post or beside it . . . I guess that might work.
Thanks Mac for starting this Topic. I just bought 2 LEFT Seats in a decent condition..
Any feedback on the Clearwater Speakers from Moss These have 4ohm impedance as compared to 8ohm w/ 3rdMillennium speakers.
