I guess it not safe for even another Democrat to be critical of this sham stimulus bill. In typical liberal logic and style, Harry Reid's spokesman first makes a personal attack on the critic and then spouts a load of bs about this being a bipartisan bill.

Reid Spox Assails Blue Dog Rep. Shuler's QB Skills
February 09, 2009 5:51 PM

In the Charlotte News & Observer today, Rep. Heath Shuler, D-NC, is quoted saying that while President Obama has "reached out to listen to his concerns," Democratic leaders on the Hill haven't.

"I truly feel that's where maybe House leadership and Senate leadership have really failed," Shuler said.

This prompted a withering response from Jim Manley, the spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

"Let me get this straight - this is coming from a guy who threw more than twice as many interceptions than touchdowns?" Manley emailed Politico's Glenn Thrush.

"Maybe Someone should tell congressman Shuler that under the leadership of President Obama we have put together a bipartisan bill that will create or save 3 to 4 million jobs, and that We have been more than willing to work with our republican friends. We have accepted some of their ideas and will continue to do so. But not at the expense of creating jobs, investing in our future of helping the middle class. He can stand on a stage if he wants, but senate democrats are busy trying to pass legislation that will provide essential investments designed to create and save jobs."

Thrush reminds us that Shuler threw 32 interceptions and 15 touchdowns during his four years in the NFL "with a rock-bottom 54.3 lifetime passer rating. In 2008, ESPN rated him the 4th biggest draft bust in league history."

Once again Mike, you weave an assumption into your post that is patently false. Personal attacks and BS are not exclusively the realm of the left; it is a "typical logic and style" found across the political spectrum. To deny this fact betrays an incredibly blinkered approach.

Steve...I honestly do not see personal attacks as frequently from the right as from the left. I know I have a bias (we all do), but I have tried to notice this...I just see it FAR more frequently from the left...particularly when they are unable to defend their ideas.

Selection/confirmation bias is bound to skew our perceptions, Tony - but the very idea that someone's political alignment would directly affect their propensity to use personal attacks when discussing issues is in my eyes absolutely groundless. I would expect that if a proper analysis were done on a large enough sample, equal proportions of people from each "wing" (what an outdated concept) would rely on such fallacious arguments.

Steve...no doubt those constructs would come into play...but I think that it would be an interesting study.

My hypothesis is that liberals are more likely to get personal...and I'm going to disprove the null hypothesis :-)

BTW...just for anecdotal fun...can you provide me with a recent example of a conservative, U.S. politician using personal attack (as opposed to attacking ideas)? I can give you quite a few from liberal U.S. politicians.

'Left Wing Logic'

OXYMORON

ox⋅y⋅mo⋅ron   [ok-si-mawr-on, -mohr-] Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun, plural -mo⋅ra  [-mawr-uh, -mohr-uh] Show IPA Pronunciation . Rhetoric.
a figure of speech by which a locution produces an incongruous, seemingly self-contradictory effect, as in “cruel kindness” or “to make haste slowly.”
Origin:
1650–60; < LL oxymorum < presumed Gk *oxýmōron, neut. of *oxýmōros sharp-dull, equiv. to oxý(s) sharp (see oxy- 1 ) + mōrós dull (see moron )

Logic?

It is NOT logical to spend money, [you don't have] to get more money.

Left wing, or liberal bases itself on 'Feelings', not logic.

[I just feel it's right to give money to people not willing to work for it themselves]
[I just feel it's wrong to go to war against a country for any reason, including their people attacking us and killing 300 innocent people in one day]

...SSJ, keep a diary, it's fun to read your assumptions based on your age experiences, how will you differ in say 30 years.......I am more conservative than I was in my 30's. I guess thats the normal progression.

Wyatt, I was once a liberal Democrat. Believed in abortion. Thought war was always avoidable simply by looking the other way. Was content to work just long enough to be able to collect unemployment and asked for a lay off. When I grew up and started to raise a family my viewpoint changed. After all, why should I carry others who expect others to carry them instead of carrying themselves? No one was carrying me. Been taking responsibility for my life ever since. Shame there are those who never change and expect to live like a ward of the world their entire lives

I would be concerned if at ANY point in my life my ideology did not shift from year to year. When you think you know it all, that's the point at which your mind has finally closed for business. I hope I'll never get to that point.

The 'Straw Men' killed how many on 911?

" [I just feel it's right to give money to people not willing to work for it themselves]
[I just feel it's wrong to go to war against a country for any reason, including their people attacking us and killing 300 innocent people in one day] "

Or how many in the London subway?

Notice the word, 'feelings'

Quoting; MARTY’S NOTE: I remember when Nikita Kruschev of Russia took off his shoe and pounded the desk at the UN and shouted to America, “We will take over America from WITHIN!!!” And they are!!!!

A Page From History

Norman Mattoon Thomas (November 20, 1884 to December 19,
1968) was a leading American socialist, pacifist, and six-time presidential candidate
for the Socialist Party of America. The Socialist Party candidate for President of the U.S., Norman
Thomas, said this in a 1944 speech: "The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But,
under the name of "liberalism," they will adopt every fragment of
the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist
nation, without knowing how it happened."

He went on to say: "I no longer need to run as a Presidential
Candidate for the Socialist Party. The Democrat Party has adopted
our platform."

"The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of
other people's money."
