I knew one of the PO's had cut openings in sides for speakers, but I never realized until I stripped the inside.. how totally stupid he was:

I tried to look at the same spots on the GT but they look like a different shape. What is my best bet here? Were they fully closed up or were there some openings for some reason?

There was an opening about half that size.... It was big enough for a 4 inch speaker...

Looks like the top of that opening was factory made. BTW - I didn't realize you were doing a roadster AND a GT! Man, my hat's off to you. :D Looks like you need to get someone to cut those sections out of a parts car for you to weld in place in this one....

Blake's right. Originally, there was an opening just large enough to get a hand (and a skinny arm) in there. Great for access when the captive nuts holding the folding top/tonneau bar holder escape captivity. Maybe he was proud of his new hacksaw?

I've done similar, but not so excessive. Think they were 6" round speakers, to just fit. Of course, I then hammer formed the edges as original, to stiffen it - that one will really fool somebody someday - looks very factory.
The end result was excellent, as the volume enclosed made the bass really good, kinda like them boom-boom cars!.

He liked BIG speakers and wasn't too concerned about the structural integrity of a unibody constructed shportscar?!

Hey im feeling you on those holes too. When I bought my 'B two years ago and did all my interior work this past year I found gigantic holes just like that!! argh.

I don't think the structure is compromised much if any with that increase in the stock hole(S?). That hole is for access to the top studs also. But then, I'm a moron.

Those large holes will make it easy to keep your doglegs rustproofed.

Who needs speakers when those holes are big enough for a couple small TVs and a DVD player...

Paul: Here is a shot that shows the size of the opening. It is necessary to attach some of the lift the dot studs, etc. Oops! Looks like Paul M. beat me to the punch.

Thanks for those two pics. Damn.. he did go nuts with the hack saw. Perhaps I will put my speakers in there and fill with metal around them.

I put speakers in that place on my GT but there were two small holes with solid metal going between them right even with the door latch. I cut that out and pop riveted a 20 guage plate to the area to stiffen it. The 6 1/2" Kenwoods fit there nicely and sound good. I also dynamatted the inside of the cavity and the face too.

Is there supposed to be carpet on that area or a panel?

It should be a panel.

I hate to be a smartass but "Moron Allert" is spelled wrong. :-)

And no...I wasn't the DPO!

My bad! It is just one hole and an indentation. Still looks like a great location for speakers to me, since I weld up speaker holes in bulkheads (except for Simon's car and that one made me wonder why I did all the other ones).

Paul, cover it and drive it. Spring Fling is end of May. You need to be done.

It is the American Spell Checker on Firefox. It spells hundreds of things wrong and I get fed up changing them to the correct spelling. :)
