While installing my new Moss #444-020 HeadPipe on my 63, I noticed that the provided clamp around the downpipe is pretty loose when it is fully tightened. This clamp is attached to the support bracket at the transmission bellhousing, it seems this bracket is only good to provide lateral support of the pipe since the bracket is pretty thin and cannot support much vertical load.

The question I have is this HeadPipe clamp supposed to be tight on down pipe? If it is then there is an error in fabrication and it either needs to be shimmed or welded. Or is it to be loose and pulled to one side by the support bracket?

Maybe it is to be loose to allow thermal expansion, but then what is the purpose? And if it is loose, won't it rub and make noise?

Thanks for any insight.

All of that should be tight.

I bought one and had the same problem. I am going to get an exhaust clamp with my next order and try that.

It should be tight. Contact Moss w/O.D. of your downpipe at hand.
You should not have to modify or shim.

I'm with RS on this. Your assumptions are correct. If you don't mind the "look" you could cut the clamp and put a stainless clamp around it but it should be a tight fit or as you suggest it will rattle and be EAR atating...
