Why is the short form for Richard, Dick?
But for Robert, is it Bob?
And for William, it is Bill?
And for Paul, it is Paul?
These are questions we need to resolve.

My Dad is Robert... He is called Bob
I am William... I am called Paul..
Good question Bobert.
My father's name is John, and he goes by Francis.
My name is John, and I go by Jack.
If I had had a son, I would have named him John and called him - John.
I thought there was no shortened form for George until I got phone calls asking for Geo.
Go figure

The Mike.. you must know someone by the name of Owehay?

I am Richard and I have no clue why they call us Dick for short other than my old childhood friends calling me dickhead.
My cousin's name is Richard and we all call him Dick. He has a son also named Richard and we call him Little Dick.
Well my name is Michelle and for years the teachers called Michael when they took role, now someone tell me why a teacher couldn't tell the difference and get it right?

Depends - are you male or female? I have run into men named Michelle, but in this country, so very rarely. If you are male, I could understand a teacher assuming someone mis-spelled Michael. On the other hand if you are female, I haven't a clue...
PS - my first name is Daley - more often than not folks pronounce it "Dally". If it had been my last name, no one would ever question the pronunciation. But folks call me Jack.
The one that blows me away is "Peggy" for Margaret. Our son, James, has always been called "Ted."
All female :). I spent a lot of time in the principals office for skipping class, but yet never actually got into trouble for it since I told him I would answer "present" when the teacher was smart enough to call me by the right name :).
I agree about the Peggy thing, I could never get how Margaret became Peggy.

Because.... Margaret Bundy just never sounded right. :)
How abbreviations of the last name? I "became" Sunny early on in my working career (still in Germany) because of my fairly long last name, and it stuck. Rather unpronounceable last name, at least here in the US. Very few people even know my real first name, and even my business cards say "Sunny Sonnenrein".
:)
My name is Tito....I wont say what people call me for short....
A girl at High school was named Virginia, we called her Virgin for short but not for long !!.
LOL, I hadn't heard that one in a while...

A friend of mine said, "Old John must like me, he called me Bud" I had to let him down and tell him the John calls every Bud unless he can remember their name. John is 89 and has called me Dave for over fifty years. He'll probably start calling me Bud pretty soon.
My name is David but most people call me "Jerk". hmmmmmm
I don't understand it.
"Well you can call me Ray, you can call me Jay, you can call me Sonny....."
