OK...took me 3 hours to get my new MC installed, bolted in, solid.

Then, of course, I read some articles about BENCH BLEEDING! Not happy about that, but hoping I can bypass this. I remember replacing one years ago w/o doing this so I'm crossing my greasy fingers.

My question...can someone give me a quickee step by step to go from here? It's a 73 so tandem with no vacuum booster.

I have a brand new unit with no fluid in it yet. The pedals are hooked up and ready. I have a new bottle of Castrol fluid.

Now what..........? WHats my sequence...at what point do I need my wife out there? I have a "visibleed" thing...will that help?

Yeah....not gettin any pedal. Fluid will come out of both rears, but pedal still goes to the floor.

I seem to remember doing this 20 or so years ago and having to pump the pedal for about 15 minutes straight before there was any resisitance. Does this make sense?

My experience may be apropos, maybe not.

before sticking the thing in I bleed it in a vise.

but the installation in a B is more difficult than most. so i don't think i did that las time.

with the unit in place, I screwed in a plastic bleed fitting with some hose and bled the cylinder in situ. Then connected the lines and (IIRC) bled it at the pressure switch.

Then I used a large (2 oz) syringe to empty the MC, and pushed the juice back up the system, starting from the back. After all 4 wheels, system was good. One handed, no helper required (but a lot of up and down).

I don't bench bleed. Start at the rear left wheel cylinder with an open bleeder and a hose attached that goes into a bottle of fluid. 10 pumps, refill master, 10 more pumps. close wheel cylinder and go to rr wheel cylinder. Repeat process. Move to rf caliper and repeat process. Last, is lf caliper and repeat process. Check pedal and repeat process if necessary.

See this link for bench bleeding the master cylinder.

Thanks, Gentlemen,

Bench bleeding probably would have been the way to go.

Using Chris's method, me and a friend went around the car about 5 times and eventually got the pedal up. There may still be a bubble or 2 here and there but essentially the pedal feels firm.

Will road test it next week-end. Great to have a competent assistant and your advice!!
