Anyone know where I can buy a racing type seat for my 76 midget. I really like the look of the racing seat and wondered if one would fit in my midget. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Louis

well it depends on what seat your looking for. There are the big boys like Sparco, Momo, corbeau, etc. I have heard of people putting fiero and miata seats in MGBs as well as midgets. Do you want a fixed back? one that reclines? one that you can move forward and back? I don't think there are brackets out there that are made for midgets, so you would need to come up with your own brackets to attach the seats to the floor pans. Ebay is a good place to check out designs and sometimes even buy, just make sure you buy from a reputable seller.
How "racy" do you want them to be? I'm using two Kirkey race seats in my "Spridget Project" ('62 Sprite); they came from Summit Racing:

^^ Those look nice, but I would be worried about the seat being higher then the roll bar. If you roll, the pressure that the seat would take could break the brackets holding the seat down and come loose.
Now we're talking! Ray did you have any issues with clearences with those seats? Did you just bolt them directly to the floor?
They look nice and right along the line of what I was looking for.
Thanks

The seats are aluminum and extend above the roll bar about 3/8" on the outermost corner. I believe what you may be seeing is the cover which extends up 1/2" or so above the bar. The seats are bolted directly to the bulkhead/floor reinforcement member on the outside and to a fabricated 1"x1" steel tube on the inside (see photo)...I don't think they'll be coming loose anytime soon.

No, the seats fit nicely...even clear the convertible top (hood)...like I'm really going to use it :)
There are more photos of the installation on my site: www.raysmg.com under the "Spridget Project" link and then on to the "Bodywork" pages (Dec-Feb).
I had considered going with more "cushy" seats...even picked up one at Summit to try; it would just fit between the tunnel and inner sill, but surgery would have been required on the new seat to be able to fit it around the emergency brake lever. It also did not convey the image I wanted...too plush.
The Kirkey seats are actually quite comfortable; the newer pads have more padding (especially the bottom) than the one I had in the Bugeye race car I sold last summer. And, you get good support with the wrap around rib panels.
These are not seats that I'd want to knock down 600 miles/10 hours a day in on a regular basis...but are exactly what I want for those 2 or 3 hour runs up into the mountains.

The Kirky's are neat. Watch out for seats with "wings" that extend out the back, many are too wide and will foul the cockpit edge. I bought a couple of APC seats for my Midget at a swap meet and found out too late that they didn't work. Fit fine at the base but rubbed higer up.

I hope my first message didn't sound like I was trying to tell you that you did something wrong. I just wanted to make sure that you are safe out there. From the sounds of it you got everything figured out very well.
Do you think this one fill fit for a driver's side only seat?

I like that it reclines but then wondered if there would be enough space for it to recline after all. Open to any opinions.
I like your seats Ray just wondering if the wing would hinder my exit out of the car. I'm about six feet tall and getting in and out of it is kind of tricky.
I had the Kirkeys in the GT and can vouch for the comfort. Kinda warm on a hot day though.
Cheap when compared to other options.
Keep in mind that you order these by hip size; they are real race seats and will hold you in place because there is NO room to slide. Couple of hours is about all I ever sat in them.
Cops do not like them when they pull you over. If you area has a hot spot with street racers, you will not make friends with the cops.
Getting in is a whole new game. I had mine on slidders since they were in a GT where you can't climb in the roof.

Louis, I think you'd have the same problem as I did, the wings at the shoulder area will hit the cockpit edge just behind the door and not allow the seat to sit square on the floor. The Summit seats look to be almost identical in shape to the APCs I tried.
Other than the Fiero or Miata seats one of the other options would be something like these Corbeau Classic models http://www.corbeau.com/products/classic/classic.shtml
Narrow enought to fit the MG floor and excellent lower side support.
Thanks Bill.
It looks like I'm going to have to go out and take a lot of measurements and make sure I get the right seat for the limited space I have.
Louis, you might want to see the red Corbeau seats that Erick V has for his Mini project. They look real classic and will hold very well. He has them in his shop.
