I have a lead on a 5speed from a 280zx. The seller does not know the year or if it is from a turbo car. How can I tell what I am looking at?

Get with Rivergate. He sells most of the conversion parts for the Nissan to MGB that is used. He will tell you all that you need to know, and offer you a complete kit that you will be able to do a bolt in conversion.

The best trannie is from the 81-83 car. It can be recognized by the single mounting tab on the rear drivers side of the trannie...the earlier units have dual mounting tabs. I think I have at work a website that referenced this and shows actual pictures. I may have found that site originally here so you might do a search.

Here's a couple of pics of an '83 280Z 'box attached to my GT's engine that may help as well:

Whats that big plate between the engine and transmission?

Dave,
All MGB engines have a front and rear engine-plate. The Rivergate kit replaces the stock rear plate to matchup with the Nissan bellhousing.
I have uploaded my Rivergate 5 speed 280zx conversion photos here:

Clay's got it. That's the new aluminum end-plate Rivergate provides in their kit to match the B motor with the Nissan bell-housing. That's the original B starter as well. A little filing on it's housing to clear and it bolts right on.
The original B front and rear plates were usually painted engine colour so they don't stand out as much as bare aluminum.
It's a great kit and the folks at Rivergate are a pleasure to deal with.
there are 4 different 5th gear ratios used in the 280-series 5-speed boxes. two are about .82:1 (or thereabouts) and two are about .75:1.
get the .75. MUCH better. Yes, the engine does have enough umph to pull it quite nicely.
you can check the ratio by putting the box in 5th (up and to right of third) then turning eitehr the input or output shaft and noting the rotation of the other. you'll have to set up some kind of rig to measure accurately
there are other criteria as well. ask Rivergate. the kit costa about a grand and includes everything you need except throwout bearing, bearing/clutch fork retainers, and rear/trans mount. You are better off IMHO to NOT use the long flex line they provide for clutch hydraulics and instead get conversion pieces to use a shorter lone and connect it to the stock hardline.
my conversion transformed the car!!!
