People always stop me to talk about the MG. Today it was the meter guy. He was telling me that he has a hobby of restoring cars. Has a 1940-something Cadillac. More recently, he heard of a car in a barn at a small town (Olds) nearby. He went to see it, but it was sold when he got there. The guy told him he had another old car that might interest him. When he threw the tarp off it was a gull-wing Mercedes! He let him have it for $1,200!!
It needs work - one of the taillight lenses was broken. Turns out it was *glass*. Mercedes still had the mold and cast him a new one - for $1,400!
Still, Wikipedia notes that these cars are selling (in mint condition) for up to $400,000. I suspect this will be a *very* good investment! Still, I'm happy with $30 taillight lenses.

If it is in fact true, that is one helluva barn find. Being skeptical, I would find it hard to beleive that someone with the means to have gullwing 'cedes would have just left it in a barn...but anything is possible. Would love to see photos of that one.

me to.
ranks up there with the pissed off divorcee who sold hubby's Ferrari for $50 and sent him "half the money"
Terry,
Sounds just pretty darn good...alomost a tad hard to believe. Have you asked him if you could have a look?
Just watched one sell on Russo-Steele for nearly $700,000!
This will be a great story if it is true.
One part that does ring true, Mercedes state that they will supply any part for any car they have ever manufactured. If they don't have the tooling they do still have the drawings and will make whatever component you need.
Doubtful story but possible. My optometrist from the early '80s had a low mileage XK-120 given to him by an old widow when he was in college. It sat the attached garage of a home he passed every day going to class and he started stopping by to chat and asked about the car only once. After some weeks she gave it to him.
Read "The Cobra in the Barn" for some great stories.

Oh, I agree with all of you - he may have been making it up. But he certainly knew quite a bit about old cars and the gullwing in particular.
