Repeat OT topic, sorry. I never figured this out. It was suggested that maybe I had a bad batch of CDs, but that is not the case. When using I-Tunes I cannot burn a cd, and get a "burner error 4000", when I use Sonic to burn It actually burns the cd but the sound skips and the first 3 tracks do not work at all. When I use Media Player it thinks the CD is used or bad and will not even start. I am using XP pro on a Dell Dimention 4600. Any ideas are welcome.. This is really messing up my LP to CD copy party tonight!

I use the Roxio suite and select "optimum speed" so it has control over the write rate. I have used several brands of discs and price doesn't seem to matter much as to how well they perform. I found stacks of 100 Imation discs at Staples yesterday for less than $18. I bought two stacks and they work just fine. I think it is a combination of too fast in the write speed department and secondarily the discs that you are using. Jack

Wow I have never had a problem with ITunes. So I would like Jack go for bad discs.

Turn down the write speed. What software you use doesn't matter, they all work basically the same way. But CDs vary in quality and write speed so you sometimes have to slow down the transfer of data to the drive to avoid errors on the disc.

It's also possible you have a faulty or dirty CD drive. If it has always had this problem, it could be connected improperly to the system, or the software and / or bios settings for the drive are wrong.

CD burning is as basic as it gets these days so I'm sure the problem is something simple. Good luck!

You should have Med. player #10,first. There is a #11 on the way, they both match well with XP. Nero #7 is the best i have used for both audio and DVD! You may have another cd burning program interfearing with the process! Some programs will not allow you to use more then one. Sony is famous for that-[Sonic]. Just disable the others and use the one you want.

If you still have a problem, set up a specific file on hardrive and load there then transfer to med. ctr. and create playlist. Also some may have a copy-guard, but there are ways around that!

Cheers

My guess is a dirty or defective drive(try some canned air), but first I'd try to slow down the burn speed. When my students try Max speed in the Mac lab, they usually end up making coasters. Kick them down to 16x-32x, they usually are successful.

also, try some of the disks on a different machine. Burn some elsewhere, play on your machine, see if it still skips.

Just to finish this thread, I ended up replacing the drive ($51). This is after messing with this thing all day yesterday and late last night with Dell support. Now working fine, easy straight replacement, wish I had done this yesterday... thanks for all the suggestions.
