OK, now that I've got your attention... I need to pump oil uphill into the xmission of my '79. I have one of those plunger contraptions with flexible hose that you suck out of the oil can, and then push into the intended orifice. I was wondering, has anyone fabricated something that you could hook your compressor up to, feed it some air, and push the oil along that way? It would be sort of like a bong in days of old, though probably not as much fun. Just thinking out loud here.

I haven't used compressed air because it might aerate the oil and make a mess - and give an innaccurate reading of how full you are. But you can get a simple drum pump and turn the crank. There are also siphon pumps (you can get them at harbor freight) that would do the job too but you'd be squeezing the bulb until your wrist fell off.

Check at a marina. I've seen a rig like that used to fill and empty inboards whose oli pans are inconveniently located in the bilge.

One of those things that hook to a drill and transfer liquids would work as well.

I don't know, something about compressed air and oil doesn't sound healthy to me. At least air from a compressor and tank setup. (possibly explosive?) A small mechanical or one of those magnetic pumps for transfering fluids sounds like a much safer thing to use.

One of those water bottles with the long plastic tube used for watering pot plants and hanging baskets seems like a viable alternative.

Holds about two litres ( one quart?) and extends about 18 inches or so.

Also thinking out loud.

Pete.

I filled it with the giant metal "syringe" after all. But I was thinking of using a stout pickle jar with two fittings through the lid: in and out. The "in" would have a short tube going in to the jar, the "out" a tube going all the way to the bottom of the jar. Snap your compressor line to the "in" side with a hand valve inline, and some clear flexible tubing on the out side, long enough to reach the trannie. I'd keep plenty of air above the oil, and only apply 5-10 lbs of air to it. It just might work. Or kill me...

Glass and compressed air in NOT a good combination especially if you are holding it in your hand.

There are purpose built units available to do what you are suggesting but they are pressure tested alloy.

Cheers , Pete.

I use a brake bleeder like this one. Except mine has a pressure gauge on it.

If you attach the hose to the exhaust port on the pump, and fill the cup with oil, you can pump the oil where you need it very easily. Works great for shocks, trans, and differential as well.

I have one just like it. Thanks for the tip!
