I removed the manifold from the head and noticed that oil was leaking out of the manifold stud (the stud came out instead of the nut coming off), this is the 2nd pos forward from the back. Is it because the stud should be coating with sealand and should not have come out? Do I have a crack somewhere that is allowing oil to come out of that hole? Is this normal? 79MGB
I have the engine out of the car doing some cleanup work.
I will be painting the engine when I get it cleaned so what should I paint it with?

If it were me I'd worry about a cracked head and post the same question. I don't know the answer. Cracked heads are very common but I don't know if this is a symptom of that or of something benign where sealant is all that is required.
I hope someone with specific experience chimes in. Like Hap, perhaps.
oil comes out of holes put a flexible sealer on studs when u replace them its normal
Thanks, that appears to be a big contributor to why the side of the block is covered with oil. No sealant on the threads when the stud came out. I have some ARP sealant that I will use.
Do I need to remove all the manifold studs to seal them or leave the one alone that are tight?
paul
I'd only pull the ones that are leaking or in poor condition.
There's only one oil feed from the block to the head, to feed the rockers and shaft and it on the rear rocker pedastal, the rest of the oiling in the head is from splash from the pushrod holes, so there is no oil behind the manifold studs, so no need to seal them. Maybe it leaked down from the valve cover or lifter covers and got into the threads of stud.
I have experienced the same problem. I had a spare head at the time, I checked it to see how oil could get into the manifold stud holes. The manifold stud holes intersect the head stud holes where the long bolts go through the rocker pedestals. I assume oil can seep under the rocker pedestal and down around the head stud and out around the manifold studs, especially if the manifold stud is finger tight. I used sealant on the manifold stud threads and it solved the problem. The manifold studs had oil on the ends and oil seeped into the manifold 3-4 inlet port. I don't know if the manifold stud holes intersect the head stud holes on all MGB heads but they do on the two heads I checked.

I always put in new studs

Hmmm, very interesting, I'll take a look at the heads I have lying around, I have some early and late heads to look at. Even at that it couldn't be a significant amount of oil, just what liitle bid bleeds from between the pedestal and pedestal base
Hap,
Would that mean one of the studs would intersect the oil passage to the pedastal?
