Is there any easy way to check if the oil sender is working?

Thanks

Are you getting readings? I bought a mechanical gauge that luckily came with the correct adapter. I believe if you ground the power wire that attaches to the sending unit, the gauge should read H. Someone else here will probably chime in.

Put an ohmmeter across the sending unit with the engine running. It should switch between 0 (or close to 0) ohms and infinity several times per second. The ratio of on vs off determines the reading on the gauge. If it is switching back and forth then it is probably working. As Horst and I have discovered, the calibration is so-so at the best of times! :)

Horst's idea works too - briefly short the lead to the block and if the gauge rises then the only thing else it can be is the sender. Don't leave the sender lead shorted for more than 15 seconds or so - it may damage the gauge.

Thanks Guys

Luckily I don't have a problem with my B.

This young guy (maybe 18) and his Dad have been stopping by the odd time to see what I'm up to...not much different as I'm usually in the garage.

His dad had a 72 I think when he was in college and thought his son would like one also. They wan't my opinon on a 70 that they were looking at for 1,800.00. There was no oil pressure and the Temp guage looked was slow to some up. I cleaned the sender connections and just under 50 at idle...Valves clicking but she fired up real nice and nice idle. What do I know really...not to much!

Looked under-neath...BAD... angle irons all over the place on the frame no floor except for the pieces of tin that the owner had bolted in. Really Really rough under there. The dog legs had it lookked like some kind of fiberglas over top. Major Rust!!!

Holes in the fender wells inside the Engine Bay...mucha rust

Gave my honest opinion and suggested that the look around a bit. The young lad was looking pretty down at that point.

So we have a young Guy in the area looking for a B for about 2gs. I hope!!

Find mechanical guage out of a later (74?) B and put it in. My 68 came with the electrical gauge setup, and when the sender went to hell, and I freaked at the price of a new one, I figured a switch-out was in order. Been happy ever since.

What all is involved in swapping to a mechanical setup? My gauge goes to 75 at startup and stays there regardless of RPM, temp, or load. I figure that can't be right...
