A friend of mine found this in the woods behind his mothers house and gave it to me. He knows I like old stuff (Junk Collector) and told me I could use it as a new motorbike helmet (Not) Anyway does anyone have any idea how old this thing might be? It is steel (it's magnetic) and has the liner with a small round white tag with what looks like numbers written on it. I was going to sandblast it a repaint it or is it something best left original?

Looks like the Italian army helmets on Hogan's Heroes reruns.

On the tag that is on the inside, the numbers that I can read are written in English.
it is european, italian or russian, if there was a prisoncamp in the area it is most likely from that camp....leave it alone in condition. since the russians were our "allies" in the last big one, italian is a good guess.

I think Italian numbers are the same as English. IIRC, they gave up the Roman system years ago.. :D
I'm a little worried about who is hanging around in the woods behind your friend's mothers' house!
Doesn't look like the US helmets I used in the early 80's. Which I think were the same as the Vietnam era. They had steel outer shells and fiberglass inner shells. New US helmets are Kevlar.
Tell us more about where, and how, it was found.
It was found by a friend who was cutting down trees behind a property his mother bought a couple of years ago. No liner in it other than the leather and the webbing that holds it all together. It was obviously not out there too very long because other than some spot surface rust it is in really good shape. The leather is really stiff and shows signs of wear, the pads inside are dis-colored from sweat.
Looks French to me. Like the guy on the wall who said, "I fart in your general direction", was wearing.

........planet of the apes........so be careful with that kinda exotic chick you talk to in the bar tonite......
Looking at various web sites, it looks like it is Swiss from either the 60's or 70,s.
Similar models, especially the inner leather parts are:
Swiss m/48-62 and Swiss M1971 (most similar).
Although neither one of these is exactly correct.
Look at the 60's and 70's helmets at:

You nailed it Brian the Swiss M1971 is it the rivets are in the correct positions along with the headliner.
Thanks Guys. Wonder what they sel for on Evil-Bay :P Just kidding
So, the Russians invaded Georgia and now the Swiss are moving in to Louisiana?
